Binding mildly worn at corners; head of spine has a 1 inch tear in the cloth. Endpapers very mildly foxed, not affecting text pages. Front hinge solid but endpaper split; back hinge solid, but last signature starting between pp 632 and 633 (still holding well). Text block clean and bright. Small waterstain on lower corner of back endpaper only, not affecting binding or text block. This is a remarkably compact edition of the Chronicles, being one volume instead of twelve! Text is in two columns, clear and readable. Johnes's translation holds up very well today for thoroughness and readability.

Fine Binding. Etat : Near Fine. First Thus. This handsome set is in threequarters red calf to red cloth covered boards. There are raised bands to six compartments with the title to the secon, the volume to the fourth and bright gilt decoration to the rest. There are marbled endpapers with some spotting to the paste downs, there are gilt page edges all round. There is a short crack to the gutter of the tissue guarded colour title page to volume one. Froissart's Chronicles (or Chroniques) are a prose chronicle of the Hundred Years' War written in the 14th century by Jean Froissart. The Chronicles open with the events leading up to the deposition of Edward II in 1326, and cover the period up to 1400, recounting events in western Europe, mainly in England, France, Scotland, the Low Countries and the Iberian Peninsula, although at times also mentioning other countries and regions such as Italy, Germany, Ireland, the Balkans, Cyprus, Turkey and North Africa. Written by Sir John Froissart, a medieval author and court historian who wrote several historical works, a long Arthurian romance, and a large body of poetry. Translated by Thomas Johnes, an architect, writer, and social benefactor who served as a Member of Parliament. From the library of Lord Raglan, Fitzroy John Somerset. Raglan"s great-great-grandfather was Field Marshal Fitzroy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan and hero of the Battle at Inkerman and Alma in the Crimean War. He also served as military secretary to the Duke of Wellington. He died in the Crimea in 1855. The house in which the library was situated, Cefn Tilla Court, was purchased by the Raglan Memorial committee for his descendants. Lord Raglan was a keen collector of anthropology and folklore, with many of the works in his extensive library focusing upon this topic. In the original black cloth binding. Externally, sound with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Joints tender. Internally, generally firmly bound. Binding very loose to volume one, boards and spine may detach with further handling. The striking colour plates are faced with a blank guard page; in two places (once in each volume) this guard page is detached but present. The silk page markers are present and attached, although the one in volume 1 is broken level with the bottom of the page, with the loose portion laid in. Aside from the faults mentioned, internally both volumes are generally clean and bright. Size: 9.5 x 7 inches / 24 x 18 cm. 768/733 pages. Combined weight: 3.5kg. Translator Thomas Johnes states in Volume 1 that the original French version is in four volumes and each of the four volumes of the French make three octavo volumes of the English translation. Bound in original full leather with decorative gilt stamped spines and title panels; gilt striped board edges. This set formerly belonged to the 11th Baron Blayney, Lieutenant General Andrew Thomas Blayney (1770-1834) of Blayney Castle, Ireland, and Lord Blayney's armorial bookplate is attached to the inside cover of all volumes except Volume 5. Some extensive rubbing wear to the front and back leather boards on all volumes, as well as chipping to the delicate decorative spines. Volume 12 has a split at the top of the front joint but it does not go through to the inner hinge. Plain endpapers.
