The second chronologically, though written after the author had written five previous books in the Lensman series. Virgil Samms is the founder of the Galactic Patrol, and the first sentient being in our cosmos to wear the "lens" (a unique badge of authority which grants the user telepathic powers). This is how the Galactic Patrol was created and the giving of the first "Lens". Softening, rubbing and a little fraying of the back strip edges with very noticeable sunning to the back strip along with stains  please see photograph. The gilt titling of the back strip has faded considerably. There is a very noticeable cock of the spine with a little rubbing and bumping of the book corners. All investigation that I could find said that this book was first published by this particular publishing house in 1948; but, on the bottom of the title page there is a date of 1950, so I can only assume that this is a reprint  please see photograph. Softening, rubbing and a little fraying of the back strip edges with very noticeable sunning to the back strip along with stains / foxing  please see photograph. The gilt titling of the back strip has faded considerably. There is a small cock of the spine with a little rubbing and bumping of the book corners. Otherwise, this is a solid, bright, Very Good copy in a unclipped, Good+ dust jacket, which has bumps with short chips to the spine ends and corners, an approx. 1" x 1.25" chip to the lower fore corner of the front, sun fading to the spine, rubbing with smudging to the covers, and a couple of short creased and closed tears to the edges. The jacket is wrapped in Mylar.
