The Ship Aground is the first Oxford Children's Library printing of 1958 - Painted Ports is the 1965 printing. B&w illustrations. The Ship Aground "derives its title from the name of a tavern that stood on the bank of London River a hundred and fifty years ago or thereabouts. That is where the hero spent his childhood, and that was his point of departure on a voyage in the best 'Treasure Island' vein that carried him to the other side of the world and back. The story is exciting without putting any undue strain on the reader's credulity, and the atmosphere and local colour of the period are well preserved." In Painted Ports, "Barty Dale is anxiously waiting to go to sea, in spite of the hardships endured in the past. When he does at last succeed in becoming an apprentice aboard the 'Sir Thomas Hobson', he is full of excitement at the thought of what lies ahead. Though misfortune follows him wherever he goes, Barty remains undaunted. After escaping from a French privateer, he finds some strange friends, and experiences an even stranger ending to his voyage." The ship Aground has light browning in page margins, one tiny corner bump, archivally taped edge tears to last two pages, light browning to edges of text block. Painted Ports has corner creases on front free endpaper, very light browning to edges of text block. The dust jacket of Painted Ports is price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, is in the original publisher's removable plastic sleeve with old price sticker on flap. The Ship Aground's dust jacket is price-clipped, has small hole on rear flap-fold, light edge wear, chip at bottom of front panel, light soiling/rubbing on rear panel, tiny tears with creases at top edge, two small old price stickers, protected by a removable mylar sleeve.
