A 1ª edição foi publicada em 1632. A presente reedição é de excelente qualidade pois reproduz todas as peças preliminares da 1ª edição como a dedicatória ao Duque de Bragança, D. Teodósio, o prólogo e duas poesias latinas em louvor do autor, assim como acrescenta mais 48 paralelos de varões e 12 de mulheres. Inclui tanbém uma dedicatória ao 4º Conde da Ericeira, uma advertência e uma aprovação do Padre João Col, da Congregação do Oratório. Typographical headpiece on p. 423. In very good to fine condition. Pictorial bookplate of Fernando de Abreu. His paper label (with shelf location?) near foot of spine. Occasional old ink manuscript annotation. (12 ll.), 432 pp. §-3§4, A-Z8, Aa-Dd8. *** Second edition of a work first published in 1623. The present edition contains 60 additional "Parallelos" composed by Francisco Xavier de Menezes, 4.º Conde de Ericeira, to whom the edition is dedicated by Miguel Lopes Ferreira. Included as well is the eight-page dedication from the 1623 edition to Dom Theodosio II, Duque de Bragança. Pages 389 to 422 contain "Parallelos" relating to women. The original edition is very rare. Important figures from Portuguese history are compared to counterparts from antiquity. A wealth of historical information is included, with references to Portuguese activities in Asia, Africa and America. Little is known of Francisco Soares Toscano, except that he was a native of Évora, devoted to letters, still alive in 1621.Francisco Xavier de Meneses, 4.º Conde de Ericeira (1673-1743), significant military figure, served with distinction in the War of the Spanish Succession, later attaining the rank of mestre de campo general. He was even more important in a cultural, enlightenment role, having been President of the Academia dos Generosos, protector and host in his palace of the Real Academia de História Portuguesa, taking part as well in the Academia da Arcadia de Roma, and the Royal Society, London. Contiene cortas biografias políticas de personajes históricos, algunos de ellos con interés por los descubrimientos en Asia, Africa y América. En el folio 172v, empieza: Parallelos de Mulheres illustres, a que algunas portuguesas se Assemelharaon em sus feitos, ditos, & obras. 18 hojas, incusive portada con escudo de armas grabado al cobre; 180 folios. Algunas notas manuscritas del s.XVII en los margenes. Encuadernación del s.XVIII en piel jaspeada verde, lomo liso con tejuelo rojo y compartimentos. Buen ejemplar aunque con un parcheado sin importancia en el margen blanco exterior de los diez últimos folios. 20x13,5 cm.
