Collection of sketches and stories, some set in Ireland, mostly nonfiction, ranging from the very short to a 100-page article on Denmark. Cloth lightly rubbed at spine ends and corner tips, some scuffing to cloth at bottom edge of front panel, spine panel a bit sunned, hairline crack along inner front hinge, still a tight, very good copy. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-274 [275-280: ads], illustrations by E. OE. Somerville, original pictorial gray cloth, front panel stamped in black and gold, spine panel stamped in gold, black coated endpapers. First edition. Eleven short stories of a comic variety, set in southwestern Cork. At least one of the stories has an element of the supernatural. "A Nineteenth-Century Miracle" concerns an act of white magic performed by an old blind man who can heal wounds with a spell -- Kane the Blood-Healer. "Sketches of fox-hunting, horse-dealing, racing, trials for assault between neighbors, petty boycotting, rural larking, full of sprightly and rollicking humour . The peasantry are drawn in caricature ." - Brown, Ireland in Fiction 1528. Some mild foxing to text block, mostly preliminaries and fore-edge, else a bright, tight, very good copy. (#113143).
