Fiction includes Yankee Notion, a J P Marquand short story, part 2 of 6 of Knockout, a novel by Charles Francis Coe, and the conclusion of Dreams That Come True, a novel by Henry C Rowland. It also includes an article about Alcatraz (The Rock - "The toughest "Big House"). Cover art (Halloween Scare) by Francis Stanley. Light soiling to the front cover. A damp stain at the top left that runs throughout the magazine and results in loss at the spine on pages 77 - 92. There is a small loss of text on pages 88 - 92. More pronounced soiling to the rear cover w/a 2.5' x 1.25" chip out of the top left. Similar slightly smaller chip on the last page (91/92) that results in text loss to the top two lines of the left column. Similar yet smaller loss to page 89/90 but no text is affected. Despite its flaw an OK copy.

Frontispiece by Stanley L. Wood in black and white is the only illustration. A tramp steamer homeward bound for Liverpool with a cargo of grain from the Argentine is advised to head for Plymouth because of enemy submarine activity during the Great War. Captn Blake however was his own man and refused but that was only the start of the excitement.

[1]: 112 He engaged in business in California, and entered the Harvard Divinity School in 1867 but soon left for a position on the staff of the New York Evening Mail. After teaching at Wadsworth and Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio (1868-1871) , he became principal of Oakland High School in Oakland, California. From 1874 to 1882, Sill was professor of English literature at the University of California. His health failing, he returned to Cuyahoga Falls in 1883. He devoted himself to literary work, abundant and largely anonymous, until his death in 1887 in Cleveland, Ohio.".
