Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Established as the best single-volume introduction to Andean art and architecture, this wide-ranging survey describes, among others, the strikingly varied artistic achievements of the Chavin, Paracas, Moche, Nasca, Chimu and Inca cultures. Their impressive cities, tall pyramids, intriguing earthworks, shining goldwork and intricate textiles constitute one of the greatest artistic traditions in history. For this fully revised third edition, Professor Stone has rewritten and expanded the text throughout, touching on many of the recent discoveries and advances in the field. These include new work on the huge stone pyramids and other structures at Caral; continued excavations of Inca child sacrifices perched on mountaintops throughout the empire, with their perfectly preserved clothing and miniature offerings of metal, ceramics and shell; spectacular murals and the remarkable burial of a tattooed female warrior-leader at the Moche site of Huaca Cao Viejo; and many new finds of high-status textiles, along with fresh analyses of weaving technology and new interpretations of designs and motifs. An introduction to Andean art and architecture that describes the varied artistic achievements of the Chavin, Paracas, Moche, Nasca, Chimu and Inca cultures, among others. It deals with the discoveries and advances in the field. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Etat : g+ to vg. First edition. Quarto. 271, [1]pp. Original pictorial dust-jacket over red cloth, with gold lettering on spine and front cover. Color frontispiece. Textiles were the Incas' most prized possessions. Their first gift to European strangers was made not of gold and silver, but of camelid fiber and cotton. They believed that the highest form of weaving was created expressly for the sun, which they considered the greatest of the celestial powers. "To Weave for the Sun" uses this images to symbolize Andean traditions as a whole and documents the collection of ancient and Colonial Andean textiles in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which is among the most comprehensive of its kind in the world. A chronological overview and accompanying essays examine the weaving as primary sources of information about their makers. This splendid volume is illustrated with no less than 405 b/w illustrations and 90 striking color plates. Moderate rubbing along edges of dust-jacket. DJ in overall good, binding and interior in very good condition.
