First edition was 1859, and British Library has an 1872 printing which is stated to be the second edition, but this 1867 edition precedes that. xvi+468p.+24p. publisher's list of works dated January 1868. 66 black and white engravings and a frontispiece. Some age-toning to paper, but free of foxing except to endpapers. Firmly bound in publisher's blind-stamped green cloth boards, some wear to extremities, rebacked with original gilt-lettered back-strip laid down. Bookplate of Philip Wright on front pastedown. Another owner's name in pencil on title-page.

Large 8vo. 6 x 8.25 inches. xviii + 501 pp. + [1] + [2] pp. advertisements. Half-title. Bound in original red half cloth, over green morocco boards, gilt. Edges and endpapers marbled. Extremities worn. Some foxing and occasional small margin tears, not affecting text, e.g., at top of pp. 3-4. Otherwise good condition. Illustrated by frontispiece and engravings in text. The first part of the book surveys the principal breeds of dog, the second is concerned with breeding, rearing, training and management and the third covers the treatment of diseases. The author acknowledges that his work, which was first published in 1859, was partly based on William Youatt, the Dog. John Henry Walsh (1810-88), surgeon and writer on sport, used the pseudonym, Stonehenge. He also published on the greyhound, the horse, British rural sports and served as Editor of The Field. 8vo. xvi. + 720 pp. Text in double columns. Bound in original half red morocco over green cloth, gilt with blind stamped decoration on spine. Boards stained and extremities worn but otherwise a good copy. Early signature at head of title. Illustrated by 30 fine plates, including frontispiece and one double page and by numerous wood engravings throughout text. A classic Victorian sporting manual covering all aspects of sports and games with a particular emphasis on field sports but also covering aquatic sports, boating, swimming, horse racing and the veterinary care of horses and dogs. Among the rural games and outdoor amusements are cricket, archery, curling and skating, riding and driving (carriages). 'Foot-ball' appears in a section entitled 'Minor games with ball,' as 'a game much in vogue in some rural districts, but it is chiefly played at Rugby, and one or two other public schools.' 'Stonehenge' was the pseudonym of John Henry Walsh, FRCS (1810-88) who eventually abandoned his career as a surgeon to become a full time writer on rural sports, especially on horses, dogs and sporting guns. He became editor of The Field in 1857. This second edition appeared in 1856, the same year as the title's first publication.
