Soft cover. Etat : Very Good Plus. Reprint. 2003. 234pp. B&W illustrations throughout. "Dhow Chasing in Zanzibar Waters is an action packed account of the efforts of a British naval Captain, G.L. Sulivan, to suppress the illegal sea trade in slaves in the Indian Ocean. The centre of this lucrative trade was Zanzibar, with its enormous slave market in the middle of the Sultan's capital, Stone Town. In command of Her Majesty's ships the Pantaloon and the Daphne between 1868 and 1869, Captain Sulivan captured and freed more than two thousand African slaves, imprisoned on Arab fighting dhows and bound for the Middle East, The capture of slave dhows was very often only, accomplished after a desperate sea battle, with, loss of life on both sides. . In addition to his blow-by-blow accounts of his encounters with slave dhows, Captain Sulivan relates fascinating observations of life on the East African coast and in Zanzibar during the nineteenth century, and records the ethnic traditions and subsequent fates of many of the African people he and his ships rescued from a life of slavery. The C latter chapters of the book are devoted to a detailed record, via the minutes of various Parliamentary committees of the time as well as various fascinating private papers, of the prevailing political views in Britain with regards to the slavery problem' in East Africa." Book in excellent condition. No inscriptions.
