Hardcover. Revised edition. xv, 291 pp, 12 tipped-in color plates by Arthur Rackham; octavo, pale blue cloth with gilt title and ornaments, tip edge gilt. Dent published another Rackham-illustrated edition of this title in 1900 in their "Temple Classics for Young People" series. That edition had 1 color plate and 11 monochrome plates and the book was in a smaller format. NB: Previous owner John Hopkins Janny (1913-1945) was a Commander on the USS Indianapolis when it was torpedoed in 1945 by a Japanese submarine. The ship sank in only 12 minutes and of the nearly 1200 crew members only 316 survived. Those rescued endured 4 days in the open ocean, most without life boats. The Indianapolis disaster remains the Navy's worst loss of life from a single ship in its history. Commander Janney was not among the survivors. RIP. A well read copy with moderate rubbing and faint stains to covers, child's ownership note to front fixed endpaper (Johns Hopkins Janney) and signature to back of half-title page, free endpapers darkened, short tear to frontispiece tissue guard.

Regarded as the preeminent prose satirist in the English language, Jonathan Swift (1667 1745) intended this masterpiece, as he once wrote Alexander Pope, to "vex the world rather than divert it." Savagely ironic, it portrays man as foolish at best, and at worst, not much more than an ape. The direct and unadorned narrative describes four remarkable journies of ship's surgeon Lemuel Gulliver, among them, one to the land of Lilliput, where six-inch-high inhabitants bicker over trivialities; and another to Brobdingnag, a land where giants reduce man to insignificance. Written with disarming simplicity and careful attention to detail, this classic is diverse in its appeal: for children, it remains an enchanting fantasy. For adults, it is a witty parody of political life in Swift's time and a scathing send-up of manners and morals in 18th-century England. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
