Etat : Very Good. 1938. Sixth Edition. Paperback. PENGUIN SPECIALS. This series was for topical interest on contemporary political and social issues. S1 'Germany Puts the Clock Back' by Edgar Mowrer was issued in November 1937. The initial print run of 50,000 books sold out in 4 days. This series achieved very large sales figures, and since Penguin's war-time paper rationing was based on pre-war usage, this greatly helped to sustain Penguin Books during the period of the Second World War. A total of 145 Specials were produced during the war until the end of 1945. A new series of 'Specials' returned to the shelves with the publication of S156The Case for Communism in February 1949. A few of the earlier books were designated 'Pelican Specials' with a blue and white cover, and some found their way into the PELICAN series marked with an 'A'. A number of others were also designated Penguin Handbooks with green covers, and then re-appeared in the newly created series of PENGUIN HANDBOOKS marked with 'PH'-from the Penguin collectors website. Soft cover. Etat : Good. This book is about the sad failure of international diplomacy during the years leading up to the Second World War. "Vingt Ans de Suspense Diplomatique" by Geneviève Tabouis, was published in paperback format in 1958 by Éditions Albin Michel. There is a Preface by Paul - Boncour. Geneviève Tabouis was an outspoken journalist who closely followed the international political scene in the decades between the end of the First World War and the beginning of the Second World War. She was early on, aware of the evils that lay behind the mechanizations of Hitler and Mussolini. ****************************************************** She warned over and over again about how dangerous Hitler and the Fascists were. She was derided - Hitler himself called her ridiculous. Others warned her that she would be called a Cassandra - forgetting that that unlucky (mythical) woman's warnings came tragically true. When Hitler's intentions were clear, and states were falling under his onslaughts . and France was only too close to being swept away by the blitzkrieg, Geneviève Tabouis was warned that a warrant for her arrest would be issued and imprisonment - it was to be a sure death sentence - She escaped France, and eventually went to the United States. ***************************************************** This book is her record of those years leading up to WWII, and a sad Record it is - sad, but fascinating. The figures that were to her daily, familiar, and often frustrating actors performing on an unlevel field - are to us the historical figures who tragically - or heroically - or with evil intent - played their part. The text is entirely in French. There is a stiff index card with a note written in ink (by .? "Charbouin"). I have shown both sides, but leave it to the viewer to translate the hand-written note, which we have left in the book. ******************************************************* CHAPTERS : Le Traité de Versailles / A la S.
