Well worn cloth hardcover has minor staining and fraying (with partial board exposure) at crown and foot of spine. Corners bumped with minor board exposure. Wear and tear to crown of spine and tiny nick to left side of spine. Hinges cracked at rear between FEP-FFEP. Inscription to verso of FEP, dated Christmas 1879. Gilt titling on spine partially faded, though still highly visible.

The tenth edition of this work in a full calf prize binding, with gilt detailing to the boards and spine, and the gilt crest of Keswick School to the front board. Marbled end papers and edges. Binder's stamp of the Relfe Brothers to the verso of the front free end paper. Prize bookplate of Keswick School to the front paste down, dated 1914. Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) was an English poet and cultural critic who has been characterised as a sage writer. This is his collection of six biographies of well-known writers: Samuel Johnson, John Milton, John Dryden, Jonathan Swift, Joseph Addison, Alexander Pope and Thomas Gray. He has taken these biographies from Samuel Johnson's famous work 'Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets' and Lord Macaulay's biography of Samuel Johnson, and edited them with a preface and notes. In a full calf prize binding. Externally very smart, with just a little rubbing to the boards. Gilt remains bright. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. book.
