Lightly bumped at the spine tips. Stated First Edition. Dust jacket (in mylar sleeve) is a little sunned along the spine and lightly soiled along the spine. At some point someone put a white sticker on the spine of the dust jacket, which when removed, tore the coloring off. I crudely tried to reduplicate what was once there with colored pencils. Dust jacket is not price clipped, has dust soiling overall, with short closed edge tears; enclosed in new archival quality removable mylar cover. The subject of this children's book (10 years and older) is the building of the steamboat, "Yavari", which was begun in 1863 and finally, after many delays, accidents and adventures, was launched on Lake Titicaca in 1871. The Yavari was originally built in England, knocked down and every piece marked, shipped by steamer across the Atlantic, through the Straits of Magellan, and up the west coast of South America to Arica, unloaded, and laboriously carried, piece by piece, by mule pack-trains over difficult mountain trails to Lake Titicaca, where it was reassembled. The story of this feat is heroic. It is told entirely through the eyes of the lad Capac, who shared in the mighty task from the very start and in the endachieved his great ambition of becoming engineer of the Yavari. Signed by Author(s).
