Volume IX: (i)-(xiii) 1-652; Etudes Economiques, Politiques, et Litteraires. Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) was a French political scientist, historian, and politician. Of his written works, Democracy in America (De la Democratie en Amerique) is perhaps his best-known and was a highly influential book during the nineteenth century. Democracy in America is an in-depth analysis of political structures, society, and culture of the United States during the early nineteenth century. Among Tocqueville's many notable concepts in this work is that the political system of the U.S., while progressive for promoting equality, could lead to a "tyranny of the majority" in which an emphasis on individuality ironically leads to each individual having no control in society.
