Edition originale
First edition. 12mo. xxiij, [1, blank], 306, [4, Approbation & Privilege] pp., woodcut head- and tail-pieces. With the half title. Small 5mm closed tear to fore margin of title page, not effecting text, faint stain to the upper corners of pp. 211-264 and final 12 leaves. Contemporary mottled calf, spine with five single raised bands outlined in gilt, the second and third panels lettered in gilt on red morocco labels, the rest tooled in gilt with fleurons, covers with single blind fillet borders, red edges, marbled endpapers (extremities ever so slightly rubbed, otherwise a most handsome copy). Paris, Chez Barrois. An interesting treatise that sought to justify the commercial loaning of money at interest, instigating various refutations by the clergy, incensed by its defence of usury. It also includes a useful and detailed history of eighteenth century debate about the legality of charging and paying interest. The work of the three authors, with principal authorship attributed by Barbier to Pierre Rulié, a parish priest of Saint Pierre de Cahors, with the text then extensively revised by Jean Louis Gouttes (to whom Einaudi actually attributes authorship) with the assistance of Anne Robert Jacques Turgot. The argument presented draws heavily, with extensive quotations, from Turgot's paper Sur les Prêts d'Argents (1770) in defence of lending money at interest, described by Schumpeter as ?by far the greatest performance in the field of interest theory the eighteenth century produced?, as well as Turgot's Reflexions sur la Formation et la Distribution des Richesses (1776) and unpublished manuscript material. Contemporary ink shelf mark '793' to front cover, small contemporary ink notation to verso of half title, to title page. Barbier, 17786; Kress, B.319; Goldsmiths, 12046; Einaudi, 2667 (under Gouttes).
Couverture rigide. Important. [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND] xxiij (1) 306pp. (3).

Edition originale
First edition. The work is assigned by Barbier to Pierre Rulié, a parish priest of Saint Pierre de Cahors, with the text then revised by J. L. Gouttes and by Turgot. The treatise serves to justify the commercial loaning of money at interest, and instigated various refutations by the clergy, incensed by its defence of usury. Turgot's 1770 paper on lending money at interest is quoted extensively. Uncommon, with Library Hub listing copies in six British institutions. Barbier 17786; Goldsmiths' 12046; Kress B.319. Duodecimo (163 x 96 mm). Contemporary mottled sheep, smooth spine tooled in gilt, red morocco label, marbled endpapers, red edges. With the half-title and privilege leaves. Very minor insect damage to sheep, marbling of front free endpaper peeling, contents a little toned. An attractive copy.
