Quarto; hardcover, with silver-gilt spine-titling; 104pp., with 99 full-colour plates. Text block edges embrowned and dusted along the top edge; text pages are embrowned (plates remain crisp and clear). Dustwrapper is lightly rubbed with some very minor shelfwear to the edges. Very good and professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. This book investigates the world of religious art and embellishment as it was practised in Europe from the 6th century to the flowering of the Renaissance in Italy. As the practice of writing and lettering spread outwards from schools were formed by the great Emperor Charlemagne who collected together in his Scriptorium the finest living artists of his time and Jean, Duc de Berri, brother of Charles V of France, who commissioned many of the world's greatest illuminated works. The last major school of illuminated manuscripts was that of Padua where Girolamo dai Libri was the chief exponent under the tutelage of Andrea Mantegna and Squarcione. The 100 plates of his book convey the full flavour of the lettering styles which, coupled with the border decorations, make it a valuable source for artists and designers.
