Etat : Very Good. Small broadsheet. (13 x 19 cm.). Dated June 24, 1863. Court Martial of First Lieutenant Thomas C. Baldwin, 7th Iowa Volunteers for two counts of drunkenness and a third count of "taking "a negro wench into his tent, took her in bed with him, and lay with her until nearly midnight with his tent doors open." Baldwin plead guilty to all three counts and was sentenced to be dismissed from the service. The proceedings were then forwarded to President Lincoln for review. The record was found defective in not showing that the court was properly organized but, since Baldwin admitted his guilt of "a most gross and debasing offence," the President directed that Baldwin be dismissed from the service. Exactly what made his conduct "gross and debasing" is not entirely clear. Was it not closing the tent flaps, taking a woman to bed, or taking an African American woman to bed? It seems unlikely to have been being drunk.
