By the end of World War 1, Ernst Udet was the ranking living German Ace, second only to his commander, the great Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron who had died in air battle. Udet was one of the few German pilots to have fought in all four years of the War, and to survive. In this highly readable autobiography he recounts the highlights of his career. It is a story of military heroism set off with scenes of forced landings, crashes into hangars, take-offs without tires, imprisonment for faulty flying judgment, and bailing out of a flaming aircraft. It is a story of personal fear and frustration coupled with compassion and courage. Contents in Twelve Chapters: Introduction to New Edition, Flight Over Enemy Territory, First Combats, Death Flies Faster, Richthofen, Homecoming, The End, New Start, Four Men in Africa, America on the Wing, On the Edge of the World, and Curtain.
