Frame measures 13 x 15 1/4" This rare, small version of Mercator's map of the Americas is ornately decorated with ships and sea monsters and provides a fascinating insight into conceptions of the New World in the 17th century. First published in Cloppenburg's "Atlas Sive Cosmographicae Meditationes De Fabrica Mundi Et Fabricati Figura," this example of the first state of the map, Latin edition. Islands, settlements are other locations are profusely labeled, and minuscule drawings of hills and trees describe the surrounding terrain. The map contains numerous inaccuracies and inventions, indicative of misconceptions and dreams about the Americas' geography. Most notably, the rendering of California as a peninsula and the open-ended depiction of the Great Lakes point to the continued hope at this time for the discovery of a Northwest Passage. Sea monsters and sailing ships are depicted in the oceans. Latin text on verso. Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594) was an accomplished mathematician, cartographer, globe maker and engraver but is best known for the Mercator Projection. Incorporating the newly accepted fact that the world is round, Mercator was able to render longitude lines consistently straight on a chart. Although this requires some distortion, it was of great use for navigators, and is historically important, as it is still the most commonly used projection today. Johannes Cloppenburg was an Amsterdam-based publisher who produced his first edition of Gerhard Mercator's 'Atlas Minor' in 1630. (Burden 224).…
