Hard Cover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First Edition. generally fine condition. Varley was an 18th Century agricultural writer, author of the anonymously published Modern Farmer's Guide. In this book he included an account of 'the author's life and travels, by a real farmer'. This autobiography, described by one commentator as 'remarkable as the contemporary picaresque novel' is what constitutes this book. While Varley's anonymity was maintained up until Clarke, who was librarian at the Royal Dublin Society, established him as the author, it looks as if nobody tried very hard to uncover him. It presented little problem to Clarke. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
