In addition there are 3 introductory essays: THE BOOK ARTIST: IDEAS AND TECHNIQUES by Lynd Ward; THE EUROPEAN PICTURE BOOK by Fritz Eichenberg; and DISTINCTION IN PICTURE BOOKS by Marcia Brown. Two indexes. Bound in the original greenish-blue cloth. This copy has the elaborate bookplate of the award-winning painter and illustrator Jeannette Campbell Shirk. See her biography in MANTLE FIELDING'S DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN PAINTERS, SCULPTORS, ENGRAVERS (p. 851, 1983 edition, updated by Glenn B. Opitz). Shirk graduated from Carnegie Library School and earned her master's degree in fine arts at the University of Pittsburgh. Her thesis was Picture Windows: Children's Book Illustrations. Shirk was Fine Arts librarian at the University of Pittsburgh from 1950 to 1963. Her collection of finely illustrated books and some examples of her art are now part of the special collections at the University of Pittsburgh's Elizabeth Nesbitt Room, Information Sciences Library. .
