Paperback. Etat : Fair. Reprint. Large 8vo. pp 367; 414; 312. Disbound. Suitable for rebinding or reading and reference. Portrait frontispiece. Three volumes. Printed at the Shakespeare Press, by W. Nicol. Considerable additions by the Rev. James Dallaway. Advertisement reads: The proprietor of this edition, in offering it to the public in its present augmented state, feels himself justified in claiming their indulgence to the following observation. It is well known, the the portraits which ,r. Walpole procured to be engraved for the former editions, were not only sometimes taken from authorities inferior to others equally accessible, but that they were executed in a manner which, candour must allow, exhibited the parsimony, rather than the encouragement, of this otherwise noble patron of the arts. Neither care nor expense have been spared to render the present engravings, as to number - exact imitation of the originals now selected - and high finishing, worthy of the work they embellish and of the best modern artist, who have been engaged for that purpose. Disbound (i.e. lacking covers) but otherwise inÊdecent sound condition with clean text.

Originally published in 1762, this revised edition, based on an edition issued between 1826 and 1828 ("with considerable additions") edited by the antiquarian James Dallaway, is the first with notes by Ralph N. Wornum. Late in life, Walpole, 4th Earl of Oxford, described the Anecdotes as "the only thing I ever published of any use." It was mainly based on the archives (40 volumes of manuscripts relating to English painters, sculptors, engravers, and architects) that Walpole purchased in 1758 from the widow of engraver George Vertue, which Walpole later wrote contained "an infinite quantity of new and curious things."
