This edition came into competition with that issued by Browne in the previous year, and gave rise to 'sundry skirmishes and passages of arms between the two editors.' Browne's charges of plagiarism appear unfounded. Hawkins reproduced the two parts of the 1676 edition ignoring most of Moses Browne's changes, he disagreed with Brownes editing. G: in good condition. Cover rubbed and marked. Edge-wear. Loss to spine ends. Splitting to outer hinges. Inner hinge cracking. Previous owner plate to front paste-down. Sporadic foxing and browning.

Very good+ in full medium brown diced calf with a professional reback of the spine upon which has been placed a gilt on red leather spine label and gilt tooling. The front and rear boards have contemporary diced leather within a gilt double border. The end sheets are contemporary marbled paper. A small octavo measuring 7 5/8 by 4 5/8 inches lacking the 1/2 title page as is typical with this title. The tips of both boards have been bumped with the leather worn through to the underlying material. Part I of the book contains The Life of Mr. Isaac Walton in lxxvi (76) pages followed by Walton's The Complete Angler containing 262 pages, a page of explanation and three plates of illustrations as well as two music plates facing pages 204 and 262. Part II of the book contains Some Account of the Life and Writings of Charles Cotton, Esq. xxxii (32) pages; followed by Part II of The Complete Angler of 111 pages after which is an index. Although titled "Sixth Edition" this is actually the seventh "Hawkins" edition. (Wood, A Bibliography of The Complete Angler, p.32; Thacher, p.540).

This is a beautifully bound copy of the two parts of The Complete Angler, the 1653 classic on nature and the art of fishing. This fifth edition includes the Advertisements for the Third, Fourth, and Fifth editions. Izaak Walton (1593-1683) first published The Compleat Angler [original spelling] in 1653, and continued to add to it for over 25 years. It is a work in praise of fishing and nature, including prose, verse, and song. His friend, Charles Cotton (1630-1687) added to it with instructions in fly fishing and fly tying.

'The Compleat Angler' is Izaak Walton's best known work. It was edited and expanded by Walton for over a quarter of a century. The work is a celebration of fishing through prose and verse.The second part of this work is written by Walton's friend and fellow angler, Charles Cotton. This is the seventh edition of the work, and the first edition to be edited by Bagster. Bagster was the founder of the publishing firm 'Bagster and Sons'. He is notable for his polyglot bibles. With the lives of the authors by Sir John Hawkins as called for. From the library of Charles Montogmery Rivaz. Rivaz' bookplate to the front pastedown and his inscription to the front endpaper. Rivaz was a British India Colonial Administrator. Following his name to the recto of the front endpaper Rivaz quotes Walton from this work 'and 1st the blessing of St Maters' Master, he upon all that are lovers of virtue, and dare trust in his Providence, and be quiet and go angling'. With a frontispiece of Izaak Walton, Charles Cotton and Sir John Hawkins. Engraved half-title and fourteen plates by Audinet. Two music plates and several in-text fishing engravings. Two woodcuts. Collated, complete with the scarce publisher's adverts. A very smart copy of this work. In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the spine and to the board edges. Externally, generally smart with patches of rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. The gilt to the spines has faded slightly. Split to the rear joint, with the hinge starting but firm. Bookplate to the front pastedown, Charles Montgomery Rivaz. His notes to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with just the odd scattered spots to pages. Very Good Indeed. book.
