12 x 16 inches, framed to 17 x 21 inches. Black paint on glass. Some light wear to frame. Very good. Pair of facing profile silhouette portraits, with Martha Washington on the left and George Washington on the right, framed in bordered ovals of worked design. The portraits are painted on the back of a glass panel in eglomise style. The figures are approximately six inches in height and appear to be after the famous portraits of the couple painted by James Sharples in 1798. James Sharples (1751-1811) was born in England and first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1779. Twice widowed, Sharples married again in 1787, taking as his third wife Ellen Wallace, who had been his pupil. The Sharples came to the United States about 1793 and worked in Philadelphia and New York until 1801. James did pastel portraits, which he is said to have executed in about two hours. Ellen Sharples sometimes produced copies of these for clients who wished more than a single example. The Sharples family returned to England in 1801, where James and Ellen continued their work, but they returned once again to New York in 1809. James died there in 1811, whereupon Ellen and the children returned to England for the last time. It was probably in 1797 at Mount Vernon that James achieved his long-standing ambition of portraying George Washington, finally retired to private life after his second term as president. His painting shows the elderly Washington in profile, somberly dressed, a man aged beyond his years by the weight of his responsibilities. The resulting portrait proved to be so popular that both James and Ellen are said to have copied the image regularly in response to the demand. Portraits of the President and First Lady remained popular, as evidenced by this later pair of silhouettes after Sharples' original works.

(WASHINGTON, George and Martha) MIDDLETON, E.C. Pair of framed chromolithographic portraits. Cincinnati: E.C. Middleton, 1861-62. Two portraits. Middleton used a unique method of lithography printing on canvas-backed paper in oil-based inks to produce color images of unusually high quality that were still affordable. Starting around 1861, his portraits often of figures such as George and Martha Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Webster or General Grant were prized not just locally, but even drew the attention of East Coast markets and competitors. Minor expert restoration to portraits and to original frames. Extremely good condition.

Original swatch from Martha Washington's white silk wedding dress, given by her as a gift to Mrs. Alexander Hamilton, Elizabeth, and handed down through generations of the Hamilton family. The silk swatch measures roughly 2.75 inches by 2 inches, mounted on a stiff paper card inscribed in pencil on the verso, "A bit of Martha Washington's wedding dress Wh. was Mrs. Alex Hamilton's" in the hand of Hamilton's granddaughter-in-law, Mrs. Allan McLane Hamilton, and from her collection. Hamiltonâ s grandson, Allan McLane Hamilton was a prominent psychiatrist and founded the New York Psychiatric Society. In 1910, he published The Intimate Life of Alexander Hamilton, which was published by Scribner & Sons. In very good condition. Housed in an antique leather carrying case. An exceptional association with wonderful provenance. On May 15, 1750, at age 18, Martha Dandridge Custis married Daniel Parke Custis, a rich planter two decades her senior, and moved to his residence, White House Plantation in New Kent County, Virginia. The couple had four children together and Daniel Parke Custis's death in 1757 left Martha a rich young widow at age 26, with independent control over a dower inheritance for her lifetime, and trustee control over the inheritance of her minor children. In all, she was left in custody of some 17,500 acres of land and 300 slaves, apart from other investments and cash. Martha Custis, age 27, and George Washington, age 26, married on January 6, 1759, at the White House plantation after only three months of courtship. The wedding was grand. George's suit was of blue and silver cloth with red trimming and gold knee buckles. The bride wore purple silk shoes with spangled buckles, which are displayed at Mount Vernon. The couple honeymooned at the Custis family's White House plantation for several weeks before setting up house at George's Mount Vernon estate.
