Physical description; 239 p.: col. ill.; 29 cm. Notes; "Conceived for the exhibition 'Medusa. Includes bibliographical references (p. 238-239). Summary; This is a comprehensive introduction to African art and to the enchanting powers of masks and sculptures. Just as the mythological Greek figure Medusa possessed the extraordinary power of turning onlookers into stone, the stunning African artifacts, masks, and statues showcased in this fascinating book were all created to cast spells on people. The function of these objects was not merely to symbolize a person or thing, but to incarnate a magical power that could act on people and the world during religious and medicinal rituals. Mysterious and exceptionally crafted, these masks and sculptures are deciphered by African art specialist Boris Wastiau, who examines their symbolism and ritual usage, and explores the connection between the material and spiritual. Against a backdrop of allegories are more than 100 beautifully photographed works from the Museum of Ethnography in Geneva; "Medusa" is a comprehensive and accessible introduction to African art. Couverture rigide. Etat : Neuf. neuf, sous blister, colissimo,EXTRA COST for shipping out of France, heavy book more than 2 kilos nouvelle version La terre cuite n'est pas uniquement synonyme de récipient, d'objet domestique.

Hardcover. Etat : New. 151 pages : illustrations (some colour) ; 32 cm. In a collaborative effort between the Barbier-Mueller Museum, Geneva, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, this publication and the exhibition it accompanies provide an overview of thirty-seven masterpieces of African and Oceanic art from the Barbier-Mueller collection. The catalogue entries, written by a range of specialists, describe the stylistic and contextual history of each work, and three introductory essays by members of the curatorial staff of the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas at the Metropolitan Museum explore their significance as part of an ongoing legacy of Western connoisseurship and collecting.

Livre
Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. 358 pp., illustrations, bibliography. This book explores symbolic practice in the spirit possession rituals known as mahamba in the upper Zambezi region, specifically among the Luvale-speaking people of North-Western Zambia. In it, rituals of possession are analysed as transformational practices that evoke changes in the subjects undertaking them. Furthermore, these rituals of possession are seen as phenomena that transform a long time in specific historical and sociocultural contexts. The mahamba are numerous in kind, in turn addressing serious illness, infertility, madness, failure, social distress and other ills. Alternatively displaying the features of ad hoc therapeutic rituals or those of overtly religious cults and calling membership of men as well as women, mahamba can lead into initiation to a religious sodality, to admission into a professional cast, or simply to the restoration of regular health and social status. What is specific about the transformations affecting the people and the rituals themselves? Are they related and what are the cultural and/or sociological factors determining them? How is symbolism produced and what is the role of shrines and artworks? A historical perspective and the analysis of two sets of contemporary rituals are combined to advance elements to produce answers. The main hypothesis is that a process of poiesis, the generation of symbolic fields, is due to the existence of a core processual structure that endures in possession rituals, whatever the sociological function that they fulfill. It is contended that the mahamba are instruments for structuring history that people constantly reprocess in order to face their predicament.
