Flyleaves mildly foxed, text pages white and clean, possible inscription by the editor on first free end page is the only marking. 83 pages. Packaged carefully for shipment in cardboard with U. S. tracking.

Spofford, F.M. Crawford, M.Y. Wynne, Theodore Dreiser, F-J. O'Brien, A. Bierce, and "Anonymous" (a neat story called simply "Horror"). Wells did a number of BEST American Mysteries, but this book predates those and seems to be quite rare. This copy is in excellent shape for a book of this age. Spine a bit toned; covers are square with only minimal spots or scruffs, endpapers unusually clean, interior fine.

The dustwrapper is darkened along the spine with chipping along the top and bottom. It is price-clipped. Alberto Vargas' copy with h is signature on the title page, and again on the dedication poage (with place and date) and finally again on the rear free endpaper. Joaquin Alberto Vargas y Chavez was born in Arequipa, Peru, in 1896, and became the noted painter of pin-up girls. His early career in New York included being the artist for the Ziegfeld Follies and achieving fame as the creator of the Vargas Girls. He later worked for Esquire Magazine and finally for Playboy. A chronicle of humor from the prehistoric times to the twentieth century. .
