Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : VG-. 1st Edition. 171 pages with photo illustrations. Approx. 6 ¼¿ by 9 ½¿. Gray cloth hard covers with modest wear to end tips and head/foot of spine. Edited by Jerome M. Loving with a foreword by Gay Wilson Allen. Signed/Inscribed by Loving on half title page. Pages are clean and bright, and binding is tight. Book is in very good condition. Dust jacket has tintype photo of Whitman in uniform on front. DJ has light wear to extremities and has three strips of tape reinforcement at top of spine, overlapping onto front and back covers. It is in near very good condition. There is also a May 1984 handwritten postcard (approx. 6¿ by 4¿) from the editor Jerome Loving. Postcard is written in ink and responds to an inquiry for him to sign this book. Loving states that he is presently in Paris, France but will be returning to the states soon. He also notes that he has written two other books on Whitman. Postcard is in excellent condition. George Washington Whitman was the younger brother of Walt Whitman, serving with the 13th New York at the beginning of the war - and later the 51st New York Volunteers. Whitman saw quite a bit of action with the latter unit, as he fought at Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, the Wilderness and Petersburg. His letters provide vivid accounts of the battles, and an appendix in the back also contains his war diary. Signed by Author(s).
