Pictorial Hard Cover. Etat : Good. The cover has red cloth with beveled boards. No date of publication is given. The front blank page has an owner's name with a note about purchasing the book in 1888 from another owner. The text block ends have gilt. Scrambles Amongst the Alps, by Edward Whymper, has 164 pages, a frontispiece engraving in silver and white, 15 full page b/w engravings, and multiple in-text b/w engravings. The silver on the frontispiece has caused a beige coloring on the title page. Down the Rhine, by Lady Blanche Murphy, has 75 pages, 16 full page b/w engravings, and multiple in-text b/w engravings. This title is not of the book's cover. The spine strip's cloth has faded, has 1/8 in. size, brown stains, and its top edge is a little frayed. The front board has a decorative title block with dark green back ground color that is now a little mottled from shelf wear rubbing. The title's letters are in black and do not show well against the dark green back ground. Scans e-mailed upon request.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. Edward Whymper (illustrateur). Reprint. No date, ca. 1899, HARDCOVER. Original blue cloth with brown decorated front and gilt lettering and decoration spine, AEG, pattern decorated EPs, silver-tinted frontispiece illustration with frontis tissue still present. Two books in one, this was a highly marketed ploy to cash-in on the popularity of Whymper's classic book. The book is not dated but Neate's bibliography of mountaineering books gives the date of 1899 for the book. The book has some rubbing (mainly loss of color) to spine ends and corners, slight darkening to spine, cracked inside front hinge that is holding well due to the strong nature of the underlying cloth mesh, rear inside hinge is fine, old period US postage stamps adhered to front pastedown (see photo) otherwise no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, solid binding, no foxing, usual slight tanning to page paper. The book measures 237mm tall x 180mm and has 164 + 75 pages, many b/w engravings. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED FOR SALE.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Large octavo in dark olive green cloth decorated and lettered in red and black. All edges gilt. 164 and 75 pp. , double columned, frontispiece plate tinted with silver, tissue guard, text illustrated with bluish tinted engravings. Presumed first edition thus, with no date (circa 1880) and in the green cloth (later editions were in blue or red cloth or were noted as to printing). Very good, minor rubbing to the beveled edges of the covers, shallow waer at the spine ends. Some embrowning to the page edges. Stray mark on the frontis tissue guard. Edward Whymper was a British mountaineer who was the first to ascend the Matterhorn in 1865. He also made first ascents of Mont Blanc, Chimborazo in South America and the Canadian Rockies. His "Scarambles Among The Alps" was first published as a seperate work in 1871 and is considered a cornerstone mountaineering title. Lady Murphy's "Down The Rhine" apparently only appeared bound with Whymper's book.

Hardcover. Etat : Fair. Condition graded as no better than 'fair': weak binding with pages starting to detach. Buff decorative boards and spine, now somewhat discoloured. Bevelled edges. Spine frayed to head and to tail. Gilt to faces of page block. Previous owner's name and date (1885) to second blank with newspaper cutting to reverse-reporting the death of Whymper at Chamonix. Title page part-detached. Extra plate (not in the list) being a portrait of Whymper and with stamp: 'Engraved for The Book Buyer', before the preface. Text generally bright with only minor marking. On the final 'accident' section, extra later images have been tipped in, presumably by an interested former owner, along with a pencilled comment to the margin. After the end of the Scrambles book (164pp), the publishers added Murphy's travelogue of Down The Rhine (75pp, illustrated). The main problem, as previously mentioned, is that the text is sewn through the leaves too close to the spine. As a result, if the book were to be opened wide, the pages would be pulled through the cords. This has started to happen with a central section of the book. The purchaser of the book will need to take this into account. Further information available on request. (Ud2).
