This work has compiled fifty artists from the twentieth century and showcases their artwork in vibrant full colour plates. Artists such as Stuart Davis, John Sloan, Jacob Lawrence and Marsden Hartley have been featured in this work along with many other influential painters. In the publisher's original cloth with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally excellent with only a very minor mark to the rear and light bumping to the tail of the spine. Very light age toning to the extremities of the end papers. The wrap is also excellent with only light handling marks to the rear, light sunning to the spine and very minor creasing and chipping to the top of the spine. Tape reinforcements to the head of the spine to the verso. Internally firmly bound with clean and generally bright pages with only minor age toning to the extremities. Near Fine. book.

With a chronology, a list of awards and exhibitions, works in public collections, and a selected bibliography. Bound in mustard yellow boards with black lettering stamped on cover and spine. Small chip the size of a U.S. dime at top of rear dust jacket panel and a closed two-inch tear at top of front panel. (Please see photos.) Fine in Very Good pictorial jacket. In the 1950s Graves grew his beard to ensure against gainful employment in the then-button-downed "real" world. A photograph of the bearded Graves is featured on the rear panel of the dust jacket. This monograph, lavish treatment for a Seattle painter who came to prominence in the 1940s, is also the first major tribute to the artist. Dust jacket is now protected in a clear, removable archival sleeve.
