Etat : VG Hardback in G DJ edge wear. 1st prntg. "An accomplished first novel, set in Vermont according to a publisher's press release from the University of New England which includes an interview with with the author about a repeatedly vandalized round barn which had been meticulously refurbished now being relocated to northern Vermont by its owner, a musician. Round barns are extremely rare with only three in the state of Vermont, the largest built in 1901. The first round barn was built in 1824 by the Shakers in Massachusetts. It was viewed with suspicion as a matter of religious experimention rather than sound farming practice. The idea only caught on in Wisconsin in 1896 where they were cheaper to build and operate and represented the height of technology were it not for the invention of the tractor which revolutionaized agriculture. This barn consisted of three levels and 16 pie-shaped sections for structural strength. The top floor with its top is a lightning rod. The top floor served as a haymow, the dairy floor could contain 60 cows with a circular feed trough. The round Barn is an extremely well-crafted first novel with a well-braided story line told with a variety of voices and stories.

Hardcover. Etat : As New. Etat de la jaquette : As New. 1st Edition. As new condition white boards/blue spine/gold front cover lettering and decoration/gold spine lettering contained in an as new condition photographic dust jacket. Includes Dedication; Acknowledgments; Epilogue; Reading Group Guide; and Author's Note. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author with thin blue pen on the full title page. "An extraordinarily accomplished first novel of desires postponed, thwarted, and sometimes fulfilled. In a deft and satisfying debut, Suzi Wizowaty skillfully weaves multiple story lines, told in a variety of voices, around the acquisition and relocation of a historic round barn by a museum in northern Vermont. With sympathy and insight, Wizowaty creates a range of characters - men and women, gay and straight - who wrestle with the consequences of frustrated desires. They include Tuesday Bailey, chief of buildings and grounds for the museum, who suffers from unrequited love for his cousin and childhood companion Mary, now the wife of the owner of the general store. Mary herself has suffered from a lifelong spiritual yearning, but just as she has settled on dowsing as her life's calling, she is confronted with her own mortality. Tuesday's friend Didi, the museum's public relations coordinator, contemplates an adulterous relationship with a local reporter - a man - at the risk of her happy and stable longtime relationship with her female partner. Didi's eighteen-year-old nephew David arrives for a summer visit, consumed by the sense that his own life has yet to begin but eager for it to do so. Over the course of the summer, the round barn is repeatedly vandalized, while the museum community is split by a controversial plan to sell off some of its paintings to raise funds. For some of the characters, the sumer will also prove a decisive turning point in their long struggle with thwarted dreams." - from the inner front jacket flap. Signed by Author(s).
