Einband leicht berieben und minimal beschabt, Rückenkanten ganz minimal angeplatzt, Kopfkapital bestoßen und mit kleinem Einriß. Vorsatz mit Spuren eines entfernten Exlibris. Insgesamt wohlerhaltenes, sauberes Exemplar. // Title portrait of Xenophon), Engraved frontis portrait of Xenophon and title vignette, XXII, 401 pp. 34 leaves. Contemporary leather volume with decorative gilt lettering and decor on spine. Covers a bit rubbed and minimall scoffed, Spine edges a tiny bit split, tip of spine bumped and with small tear. Front flypapers with traces of removed paper exlibris. Else nice, clean and sound copy. Overall impression is still nice. Sprache: Französisch.

2 ouvrages parus chez le même éditeur et à la même date, reliés en 1 vol., Paris, Antoine de Sommaville, 1657, in 12 de (24)-396-(12) pp. ; (24)-300-(36) pp., portrait de Socrate dans un médaillon gravé sur bois en tête du texte juste après l'épitre, rel. d'ép. plein veau brun moucheté, dos à nerfs orné de fers dorés, pièce de titre de maroquin rouge, restaurations, bon ex. 2e édition revue et augmentée de cette traduction de Xénophon par François Charpentier (1620-1702). Elle additionnée d'une vie de Socrate par le même, et a paru pour la première fois en 1650, elle valut à l'auteur sa réception à l'Académie Française. Notons que dans la querelle des Anciens et des Modernes, il se rangea avec Charles Perrault du côté des Modernes.

Erste Ausgabe der Übersetzung von Chapentier in Haager Ausgabe, Schweiger nennt 1732. Sehr dekoratives und wohlerhaltenes Exemplar. Xenophon - Schüler des Sokrates und sein wichtigster Biograph - erzählt in diesem Werk recht frei die Geschichte von Cyros dem Großen. Der latinisierte Titel Cyropaedia lehnt sich ans Griechische Kúrou paideía, die Erziehung des Cyrus an und schuf damit das im Mittelalter dann sehr beliebte Genre des specula principum, "Fürsten-Spiegel", eine Art Erziehungs- und Verhaltenslehrbuch. Macchiavelli "pervertierte" es dann mit seinem "Il Prinicipe" auf sehr atypische Weise.
