1953, London, Phoenix House Ltd., first edition, pp192, black and white illustrations, blue cloth in dustwrapper. Inscribed "For Lady Keynes in gratitude for a memorable day for the Author, Dora E. Yates, Liverpool Dec. 4 1957", and containing a loosely-inserted two page manuscript letter to her from Miss Yates on The Gypsy Lore Society headed notepaper, discussing Welsh Gypsies, and the attitude of George Borrow and his "rough manners". Dora Yates (1879-1974), was an indefatigable scholar, fluent in every dialect of Romani, and de facto secretary of the Gypsy Lore Society from 1922 almost until her death. She was an assistant to John Sampson in his studies of Welsh Gypsy language, which included resisting his sexual advances, and was responsible for organising his funeral, mentioned in this letter, from which all other women were excluded on the insistence of his wife. Aside from a little sun-fading on the spine this is a remarkably fine copy.
