That is not to say that there is one particular city form or planning practice that is synonymous with the emerging welfare city, as welfare per se is far from normative. On the contrary, welfare is a highly ambiguous and contested notion that has changed over the postwar decades, which is also reflected in the development of the welfare city. However, welfare in urban planning has mainly been associated with ideas of "the good life" and egalitarianism. In a Nordic context, the state has taken the lead in providing the social engineering "hardware" for advancing this universal aim. Social demographic welfare is economically based on full employment, and in this regard housing and caregiving support are key components. Yet education, infrastructure, and leisure facilities are also basic features in the distribution of universal welfare services for citizens' entire lives. The results, ideally, are green and spacious welfare cities. This book outlines the origins, development, challenges, and lived realities of the changing welfare city, focusing primarily on Denmark. Strategies have changed over the decades as models of development have shifted and as the needs of society and a warming planet have come into focus. The current welfare city can be described as an urban landscape characterized by, on the one hand, a division of functions and, on the other, mutual competition. The role of the state has been minimized, turning municipalities into the new major agents in attracting taxpayers and providing goods-both by means of urban planning.

Consensual - and comparatively efficient - policies have likewise been pursued in agricultural and industrial policies, in environmental policies, and in many policies related to public services. The preconditions for these policies are strong civil societies, i.e. strong capacities for collective mobilization and collective action among groups, relatively strong unitary states, and high levels of generalised trust. The institutional apparatus of these consensual policies has been labelled corporatism. Nordic corporatism has implied consent to a norm of affected interests. Groups that are supposedly affected by state policies have access to the processes leading up to political decision-making, and are involved in the implementation of policies.  This access has often public commissions or committees charged with preparing political decisions and delivering advice, as well as policy implementation committees.

Paperback. Etat : New. This text provides seven practical examples of how Danish companies implemented new information technology in order to transform their internal and external business processes. The purpose of the book is to share some of the concerns and hopes of the companies' during this implementation process, with each case study reporting on the problems met by a particular company. The seven case studies concern international Danish firms that have been through marriage of complex innovation concepts of their supporting networked IT. A common trait, echoed in each of the cases, is networked-based interaction. Three of the cases take as their departure point a company's marketing effort and its utilisation of the Internet for interaction with its customers. Three further cases take a more internal departure point -- the use of ERP systems to transform business processes. This book is the result of a project successfully integrating researchers from various disciplines: engineering, management, production, marketing and information systems.

Paperback. Etat : New. Persistent rumour has it that globalisation is doing serious damage to the nation-state at the present historical juncture. Dramatic versions of the narrative even insist that the challenge of globalisation to the nation-state is so serious that this pivotal "unit" of the international "system" is in danger of disappearing. In this book, Ulf Hedetoft focuses attention on this global-national nexus in some of its many differing manifestations, offering both theoretical, historical and analytical thoughts and perspectives on a problem which increasingly dominates academic and public debates. He argues that it makes sense to talk about a "global turn" in international studies, a change which might be as profound and consequential as the well-known "linguistic turn" in the study of society and politics. This does not mean that globalisation, spearheaded by the USA, is ousting the nation-state from the global scene. In fact, the global order needs nation-states, although their position will be radically different and their sovereignty -- except for a few cases -- without much substance. Populist and romantic nationalism notwithstanding, there is no going back to an earlier and more virginal state of national political or cultural history. In this sense globalisation is not irreversible. Whether we like it or not, the global turn is here for good.

The traditional chronology assumes a peak in production during the reign of Gallienus (AD 259-268) that fades away in the reign of Constantine.This chronology has some obvious flaws. The supposed peak under the reign of Gallienus, when the empire was falling apart, can only be described as a mirage. Some very fine sarcophagi were indeed produced in this period, but the number is very limited.With the reign of Constantine (AD 306-337) came wealth, and the so-called 'villa boom' that also revived sculpture in the round. At that time, it is believed that production of pagan sarcophagi had ceased to be replaced by Christian sarcophagi. This raises a very simple question, however: how were pagans buried?No doubt production of pagan sarcophagi continued beyond the turn of the century and Symmachus, who died in AD 402, was buried in such a sarcophagus.

Yet it is easy to forget that the thinkers who pioneered rationality and the scientific method did not subscribe to this view. For instance, Aristotle described God as the source of reason in "Eudemian Ethics", and Newton and Galileo both believed that our ability to investigate the world scientifically has a divine origin. The eight essays in this volume examine a variety of intellectual approaches to the Christian faith, addressing a number of philosophical questions en route: Are some worldviews more rational than others? What limits are there to the kinds of queries we can answer through reasoning and scientific inquiry? What role can rationality play in the study of time and reality? The catalogue contains all Aegean metals kept in the Department of Ancient Cultures of Denmark and the Mediterrenean. In the section on the Near Eastern metals, bronzes from Hama, however, are not included. Except for that, all metal objects from the Near East dated before 1000 BC are found in the catalogue.

Cultural Text Studies is a series of themed monographs, edited by researchers at the Dept. of Languages and Intercultural Studies at Aalborg University and associates and friends of the Dept. The purpose of the series is to be a forum for the publication of results of research in the broadly defined area of cultural text. Transatlantic, the present volume, offers interdisciplinary scholarship, bringing together explorations of transatlantic perspectives in arts, literature, history, philosophy and law. In the individual essays the transatlantic perspective opens up comparative aspects of phenomena within these fields, but this perspective also allows for a new type of engagement with the phenomena themselves, which are analysed in new historical, transnational contexts. The volume is itself an expression of a transatlantic exchange. The contributors are all affiliated with either Aalborg University or Brenau University, two small research and educational institutions which have long experimented with transatlantic exchanges of students, faculty and scholarship.

The concepts of aesthetics is traditionally connected with art and high culture (e.g. literature, theatre, pictorial art etc.) whereas mass media such as television are usually associated with a lack of cultural quality, originality and authenticity -- and consequently with a lack of aesthetics. And, undoubtedly, most television programmes will fail if judged by the aesthetic standards and valuation criteria of traditional art forms. However, television as a medium also has aesthetic aspects. The aesthetics of television concerns the medium's means of expression, its forms, conventions and 'styles'. But it also concerns the content and the relationship between content and expression, as well as the relationship between programme and genre, programme and audience etc. The aim of the anthology is to describe and analyse television as an aesthetic phenomenon. It addresses the question from different approaches and in a variety of ways: general aesthetic problems concerning the audio-visual media, the special aesthetic means of expression belonging to the television medium, the quality of the individual programme, the distinctive features and aesthetic codes of individual TV genres, enunciation and forms of address in television etc. Among the TV genres and programmes formats dealt with are: talk shows, television documentaries, police series, TV sport, TV fiction, TV advertising, everyday talk on television, comedy series, TV journalism, and interactive programme formats.

CTS -- An Introduction is a volume authored by present and past members of the English programme's teaching staff in the fields of culture, literature, and media studies. Paperback. Etat : New. Questions: Between Identity and Difference is in many ways a curious book. It is a scholarly book, but tests the boundaries of traditional academic methods. It is a philosophical book, but bases its arguments on observational studies in classrooms where Danish, Russian, Spanish, and Chinese schoolchildren are taught in their native languages. It is a demanding book, one that assumes its readers think for themselves. Yes it is also a generous book, which draws on the author's own experience in researching and exploring what it means to be human across a variety of thoughts and behavioural patterns.

Paperback. Etat : New. In the beginning of the 1990s, Denmark was developing along a 'basic income path'. At that time the hegemonic growth discourse was in crisis. Its legitimacy was doubted in the public opinion, and because of the unemployment crisis, basic income had been put on the agenda by new political networks and minority groups. However, at the same time a new labour market policy called 'activation' was introduced, and slowly, at the rhetorical level, the question of basic income was excluded. In public political debates and within the political parties, a workfare discourse was created, and basic income came to be considered a heretical political discourse and was made a target of negative political stereotyping. This anthology about the basic income debate in Denmark offers a discourse- analytical perspective on Denmark's development from a universal welfare state to a workfare state. With its analysis of metaphors, narratives and key concepts in the debate, it unveils how the basic income discourse ended up being both heretical and excluded. Lastly, it provides a global ecological argument for a basic income and discusses the conditions for bringing back the basic income question on the political agenda.
