Numerous colour photographs. 192 pages clean and tight. The motorcycle may have been invented in continental Europe, but it was Britain that, as much as any other country, helped to give it its modern form. Invented as the Victorian age drew to a close, the powered two wheeler grew to maturity in the 20th century when, for five decades, the history of the British industry encapsulated most of the important stages in the motorcycle's development process. From its stuttering beginnings, the British bike rapidly gained in reliability and sophistication, although it was still mainly a plaything of the leisured classes until the onset of war forced it into : a new, utilitarian role. When peace returned in the 1920s, the motorcycle was poised to fill a demand-for mass transport, ushering in a golden age of development and design. From the mundane to the exotic, there was a model to fulfill the dream, and financial arrangements to make it a real possibility. Despite the economic hardships of the 1930s, Britain still managed to produce some of the industry's greatest classics. Many of these were spurred on by racing, an enormously popular and, accessible sport, in which the products of Britain reigned. supreme. As in the first global conflict of the 20th century, the motorcycle was pressed into service in the second. With the return -of peace, Britain was exorted to 'export or die' and tens of thousands of well-designed, solidly engineered machines met the call, bringing the traditions. of the British motorcycle to &new, enthusiastic market. Again and again, the industry proved that it had the potential to come up with innovative models whose appeal was more than skin-deep. And yet the British motorcycle almost died out. With the new prosperity that began in the 1950s, the motorbike started to become marginalized. Faced with passive competition from Japan, in particular, the industry began to contract until it was no longer economically possible to design new models, or even to keep the old ones in production. But even In decline, British machines often proved a force to be reckoned with, while the energetic efforts of enthusiasts have proved more than once that the industry still has the potential to produce a world-beater.
