Brooklyn, NY: Archipelago Books, 2020, stated First Archipelago Books edition, 290pp., . "In his youth in 1970s suburban Pretoria, Joe falls in love with Muhammad Ali. He diligently scrapbooks newspaper clippings of his his hero, recording the showman's words and taking in his inimitable brand of resistance. Forty years later, digging out his yellowed archive of Ali clippings and comic books, Joe sets out to write a memoir of his childhood. Calling upon his brother Branko for help, their two voices interweave to unearth a shared past. Reconstructing a world of bioscopes, Formica tabletops, Ovaltine, and drop-offs in their father's Ford Zephyr, conjuring the textures of childhood, what emerges is a collision of memories, patching the gulf between past and present. Meaning arises in the gaps between fact and imagination, and words themselves become markers of the past and the turbulent present. In this formally inventive, fragmented novel, Vladislavic evokes the beauty, and the strangeness, of remembering and forgetting, and explores what it means to be at odds with one's surroundings". A hero to the likes of Llosa and Gabriel Garci?a Ma?rquez and a vital forbearer to magical realism, Onetti won the Cervantes Prize in 1980. A Dream Come True, beautifully translated by Katherine Silver, gathers Onetti's entire body of short fiction into English for the first time. Onetti's characters drift untethered, through strange places with unfamiliar people. A woman idles in a beachside hotel during a prolonged convalescence; a grandmother serves cafe?-con-leche to schoolboys resembling her lost grandson. In these mysterious, dream-like stories, everything is gestured at, nothing plainly told. Each offers a brief glimpse into the life of one of Onetti's vast cast of unusual characters, intimately rendering their sorrows, fears, and joys"-- Provided by publisher. ; Synopsis: A Dream Come True collects the complete stories of Juan Carlos Onetti, presenting his existentialist, complex, and ironic style over the course of his writing career. Onetti was praised by Latin America's greatest authors, and regarded as an inventor of a new form and school of writing. Juan Carlos Onetti's A Dream Come True depicts a sharp, coherent, literary voice, encompassing Onetti's early stages of writing and his later texts. They span from a few pages in "Avenida de Mayo - Diagonal - Avenida de Mayo" to short novellas, like the celebrated detective story "The Face of Disgrace" and "Death and the Girl," an existential masterpiece that explores the complexity of violence and murder in the mythical town of Santa María. His stories create a world of writing which is both universal and highly local, mediating between philosophical characters and the quotidian melodrama of Uruguayan villages. ; Juan Carlos Onetti Borges was a Uruguayan novelist and author of short stories. ; Contents: Avenida de Mayo - Diagonal - Avenida de Mayo -- Obstacle -- Possible Baldi -- Tragic end of Alfredo Plumet -- Perfect crime -- Convalescence -- Dream come true -- Masquerade -- Welcome, Bob -- Long tale -- Ninth of July : Independence Day -- Back to the South -- Esbjery by the Sea -- House in the Sand -- Album -- Tale of the Rosenkavalier and the Pregnant Virgin from Liliput -- Most Dreaded Hell -- Face of Disgrace -- Jacob and the Other -- As Sad as She -- On the Thirty-First -- Kidnapped Bride -- Matias the Telegraph Operator -- Twins -- Death and the Girl -- Dogs will have their Day -- Presencia -- Friends -- Soap -- Cat -- Marketplace -- Piggy -- Full Moon -- Tomorrow will be Another Day -- Tree -- Montiagne -- Ki no Tsurayuki -- Shotgun -- She -- Araucaria -- At Three in the Morning -- Imposter -- Kisses -- Her Hand -- Back and Forth -- Ti me dai la cosa me, io te do la cosa te -- Cursed Springtime -- Beachcomber -- Visit -- Saint Joseph ; FINE. "A dazzling and eloquent reworking of the Mahabharata, the ancient Asian epic, through nineteen voices on the periphery. With daring poetic forms, Karthika Na?r breathes life into this ancient epic. In Until the Lions, Karthika Na?r retells the Mahabharata through the embodied voices of women and marginal characters, so often conquered and destroyed throughout history. She captures the richness and complexity of the Mahabharata, while illuminating lives buried beneath the edifices of one of the world's most venerated books. Through shifting poetic forms, ranging from pantoums to Petrarchan sonnets, Na?r choreographs the cadences of stray voices. And with a passionate empathy, she tells of nameless soldiers, their despairing spouses and lovers, a canny empress, an all-powerful god, and a gender-shifting outcast warrior. Until the Lions is a kaleidoscopic, poetic tour de force. It reveals the most intimate threads of desire, greed, and sacrifice in this foundational epic"-- Provided by publisher. The third volume of the author's "My Struggle" six-volume novel. The translation is also known, particularly in the United Kingdom, as "Boyhood Island". The first appearance of the title in hardcover in the United States. Until now, all books published by Archipelago Books were softcover originals only. However, this book's bestseller success prompted the publisher to issue all six volumes in a Uniform Hardcover Edition. The softcover editions were published simultaneously in conjunction with another publisher, FSG. Presents Karl Ove Knausgaard's "Min Kamp" Volume Three in a felicitous English translation. "Finds us in the sensuous realm of Karl Ove's childhood. It's the early 1970's and the family's trajectory: Upwardly mobile. The future seems limitless. In painstaking, sometimes self-lacerating detail, Knausgaard paints a world familiar to anyone who can recall the intensity and novelty of childhood experience, one in which children and adults lead parallel lives that never meet" (Publisher's blurb). What is the significance of, and why all the fuss behind, Karl Ove Knausgaard's "My Struggle"? It is the most full-fledged break from the mannerism, academicism, post-modernism, and all other pretentious and tired isms of our time. It announces the arrival of a major original voice in literature, writing without the crutch called "concept", in deceptively simple yet eloquent prose. It marks the rejection of our obsession with "celebrity lives", by focussing on the tiniest details of one man's ordinary life as well as deeply painful struggle. An absolute "must-have" title for Karl Ove Knausgaard collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Karl Ove Knausgaard. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It should also be noted that this copy has his full signature, which is the way he signed the first three volumes of "My Struggle" when they first came out. As such, it is one of his most beautiful signatures we have ever seen. This title is a great book. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Extreme demand and time constraint have made Knausgaard resort to an Ondaatje-like swirl of a signature. Copies signed in this drastically abbreviated way have no collectible value. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER KARL OVE KNAUSGAARD TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1935744860. Signed by Author.
