Illustrations on plates.283 pages clean and tight. A full length biography and character study of Michel Ney, Napoleon's marshal who came close to snatching victory from Wellington at Waterloo in 1815 has been long overdue. Raymond Horncks spent more than five years researching the marshal's life and a further two writing the book. In Northern Europe, the Iberian Peninsula and in different parts of France he did much of his searchings where events actually happened, and apart from his new and radically different analysis of what actually made the man tick' has cleared up a number of mysteries about his early life which in earlier writings about him were left to the reader's imagination or were sometimes ludicrous guesswork. Here we can view the marshal from birth to death: with all his amazing fighting and his personal relationships in between. First there was the soldier with the Revolutionary armies, culminating in his great tenacity at Hohenlinden in 1800. Then the start of his convoluted involvement with Napoleon, including his friendship with Josephine which led to her arranging his happy marrSe. As a marshal he was the hero at Ulmrwhere an entire Austrian army under General Mack was forced to surrender, and the man who truly smashed the Russians at Friedland. So the story goes on. How he outTtTed Wellington in the retreat up through Portugal. but was then disgraced following a series of quarrels with his superior Masséna. Rehabilitation came in Russia: first at the Battle of Borodino and afterwards during the retreat from Moscow. when he gained the nickname 'The Bravest of the Brave'. He played a 'key' role in Napoleon's first abdication crisis and an even more extraordinary one when he took his troops back over to Napoleon after the latter's escape from Elba. All of this is contained within Mr. Horricks' book. Plus a lengthy examination of Ney's mistakes and near-success at Waterloo. With the heroism of his trial and execution as the finale. It often reads like a novel. However that was the nature of the marshal's life. As Berthier, Napoleon's Chief-of-Staff, wrote of him, he was more like a figure from the Age of Chivalry. Size: 8vo.
