(Paperback, 1991). (1983) 1991 paperback reprint. 8vo paperback (152 x 232mm). Ppxii,187. B/w photographs and illustrations by the author, maps, photograph end-papers. Small stain to front cover, good-plus second-hand paperback. "An Element of Regret (a documentary film screened in October 1984) reflected this classic account of a vanished Highland lifestyle and from it drew material for parts of this challenging film. The author plays a leading role expressing, as he does in this book, the sensitivities of a Highlander for the irreparable changes inflicted upon his native glens. Through a life hidden in the wilderness of Wester Ross his shepherding days glimpse the spirit of high corrie and falling torrent. The tale is not told without humour and pathos of a time before the need for cheaper electricity flooded home and pasture alike. His haunting narrative records a time of peace and happiness once to be found in an untamed world. Many may dream, none can be unaffected." .

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. H/B 187 pages, condition is very good, the DJ has been price clipped and an owners signature to the title page. In August 1956, a young shepherd, his wife, two-year-old daughter and ten-day-old son sat huddled in a small boat on Loch Monar in Ross-shire as a storm raged around them. They were bound for a tiny, remote cottage at the western end of the loch which was to be their home for the next four years. "Isolation Shepherd" is the moving story of those years. More than simply a sensitive and richly detailed account of the shepherd's life through the season, Iain Thomson's book also vividly captures the splendour of one of Scotland's most awesome landscapes, and depicts the numerous incidents that shaped the family's life there before the area was flooded as part of a huge hydro-electric project.

"Ronnie Burn was a short legged hunchback and a social misfit; his navigation was pathetic and he was not even competent with a railway timetable. He never carried more than a sandwich. It was commonplace for him to be completely lost on the hill. He took silly risks in dangerous situations. He fell down places.and he enjoyed every moment of it". Tight, clean, unmarked but with a faded spine which is common. The top edge has a few brown spots; the book is covered in a removable transparent sleeve. See scans.
