'Hollywood Haven' provides a cultural history of the exiled writers, film directors, musicians, actors, and actresses who were drawn to Hollywood seeking employment. This trend actually began in the early decades of the twentieth century when Germans and Austrians were attracted to this film metropolis. However, the author focuses here on the period between 1933, when National Socialists came to power, and 1952, when Thomas Mann, the most famous of the exiles who lived in Los Angeles, returned to Europe. During this time over 1500 German and Austrian emigres and exiles worked in the Hollywood film studios. - In addition to the information about the exiles and emigres the book presents driving and walking tours of the historical landmarks, including their homes.

This book contains the entire collection of 582 aphorisms which the nineteenth-century Austrian writer Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1830-1916) published in a number of expanded editions of Aphorismen starting in 1880. While this author also wrote poems, plays, novels, and novellas, she is known today particularly for her insightful aphorisms. Stating that "An aphorism is the last link in a long chain of thought," she presents intellectually stimulating and socially engaging short texts dealing with various aspects of human nature, morality, ethics, knowledge, education, politics, youth, age, friendship, love, marriage, sexual politics, and both liberal and female emancipation.

Softcover. Etat : Good. UK ed. Widowed and newly retired, the turn-of-the-century Austrian civil servant Julius Zihal has left the safe haven of the Tax Office and its orderly, codified administrative practices and now faces a drab and uncertain future alone. This gloomy scene suddenly becomes brighter when he discovers that the lighted windows of the adjacent apartment buildings offer a nightly display of variously-endowed ladies undressing as they prepare for bed. The expected Jekyll and Hyde contrast between Julius' Biedermeier daytime conduct and his nocturnal activities never quite materializes as the bureaucrat within him dominates the voyeur and he attempts to open a file on Eros, as it were, by carefully noting down and categorzing all the pertinent details of his observations, rather than simply surrendering to their pleasures.

The Secret of the Empire, based on Heimito von Doderer's own life as a captive of the Russians from 1916 to 1920, portrays the experiences of Austrian war prisoners in Siberia during the Russian Civil War, caught between the inexorable approach of Reds and the often cruel rearguard actions of the Whites and their Czech Legion allies. Threatened by disease, deprived of all that is familiar, and faced by a landscape that is alternately malevolent and breathtakingly beautiful - but always colossal and endless - the young Austrians attempt to deal with their captivity in a variety of ways ranging from withdrawal into the intellectual or artistic spheres to active participation in the political movements to simply finding someone to fall in love with, until they too are finally engulfed by the conflagration which has been glowing on the horizon all the while. - This early novel reveals clearly the beginnings of Doderer's lifelong preoccupation with the problems of perception of reality and character development or 'humanization.' Beyond that, however, it is a document of personal courage and enduring friendship set against the backdrop of a Russia unknown to most of us.

It has its origins in the eighteenth century, but it has become a favorite of modern Austrian playwrights for good reasons. They can take full advantage of the tradition, which seems to aim its often critical message at those who seldom have the means to set foot in a theater proper. These playwrights take their case to a greater audience than the traditional theater could or can contain; in doing so, they reenact the great ritual of the folk play genre. - The timeless elements of greed, power and inhumanity are the dominant themes of the modern Volksstuck as they were of the older, somewhat tamer versions. - The plays of this collection articulate these themes against a background of modern Austria. Austria as it was under the Habsburgs, under the Nazis, and as it exists today, buffered by social and political forces which increasingly threaten to overwhelm the frail structures of social integrity and human decency.

Perhaps one of the clues to answering the question of why Kafka's writing continues to be so compelling to a worldwide readership and why it has drawn such an enormous international range and scope of responses is that, despite its surreal appearances, Kafka's fictional world is a familiar, universal one. He revolutionized prose writing in the sense that almost all narrative authors who came later recognized his significance and were influenced by him, This still remains true in the present. -- The essays here show how Franz Kafka has impressed his seal on the identity of a number of Austrian writers; especially Aichinger, Canetti, Handke, Jelinek and Turrini.

Softcover. Etat : Good. UK ed. The factors that change the course of history are primarily the product of the contributions made by individual lives to the broad pattern of mortal existence. In his collection of 'historical miniatures,' Stefan Zweig celebrates the monumental power of the spirit to discover, to create, to transcend the limits imposed by the temporal and physical environment, while at the same time underlining man's inability to escape from the realities of his own nature. Among Zweig's illustrations of decisive moments in human experience are the stories of a siege during which seventy ships are moved across a mountainous headland in a single night, a love affair between a seventy-four-year-old poet and a nineteen-year-old girl, and a man who legally owned much of the state of California, only to have it taken from him because the government would not defend his rights. .
