Paperback. Etat : Very Good. This booklet contains hints to the solutions and answers where necessary, of the exercises contained in 'Intermediate Statistical Methods' by G. Barrie Wetherill. The following principles have been adopted in dealing with the answers. (1) In some cases the answer is the drawing of a graph, and this has been omitted. (2) In many numerical exercises a considerable amount of 'data snooping', plotting of residuals, etc. should follow the main ~sis. The inclusion of this material would make the answer booklet far too long. (3) In some cases there is a readily available reference from which the answer can be ob~ained, in which case reference has been made to this. It is not necessary to work through every exercise , but it should be recognised that the exercises are an integral part of the main text, and a comprehensive grasp of the subj ect cannot be obtained without attempting a substantial proportion of them. It is hoped that this booklet will be of assistance in pointing the way, and providing a check on the more vital calculations. The importance of numerical exercises should be stressed, and it is here that Appendix B is of importance. There is abundant material available there in many different fields of application. Currently we are in the process of mounting a form of Appendix B on a computer, together with accessing programs. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Fair. Seclusion as a concept is poorly understood and this is reflected in the literature on the topic, particularly from nursing authors. This has led to an emotionally charged altercation rather than academic debate, both within the literature and at conferences. But why bother learning about seclusion at all, particularly as it is used less and less within mental health? We would point out to those sceptical about the value of this book that seclusion is not only of interest as an intervention per se, but is valuable in reflecting a shifting ethos within care. For some reason, seclusion has been neglected; we believe that one reason is that it impinges upon widely held myths and beliefs within psychiatric practice. Questioning about seclusion uncovers uncomfortable facts and assumptions concerning the values underpinning today's mental health care approaches. Such uncomfortable questioning is often avoided for safer research pursuits. Also, we hold that this book is necessary in examining issues pertaining to seclusion practice. There is a gap within nursing knowledge in so far as seclusion is concerned, as our chapter on education upholds. Yet inquiries and litigation have highlighted the fact that seclusion practice must be more clearly understood as an intervention. At present, such understanding is erratic and far from useful in providing a higher standard of care. Practitioners need to make informed decisions regarding seclu sion, and this book aims to provide the necessary information on which to base these decisions. A readable copy of the book which may include some defects such as highlighting and notes. Cover and pages may be creased and show discolouration.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. It is both a pleasure and a privilege to be invited to contribute a foreword to this book, which deserves - and needs - to be read by virtually everyone who is concerned with the treatment and subse quent welfare of the victims of severe injuries of the brain. Some friends, relatives and workmates might be helped by reading some parts of it, but, if the book has the effect it deserves to have on therapists, nurses, doctors, and others working in both hospitals and the community, these laymen will be suitably informed and assisted by one or more members of the necessarily large therapeutic team. The improvements in methods of resuscitation that have taken place during the last 40 years or so have abolished the previously fatalistic readiness to accept that a week or two in coma after a head injury was virtually a sentence to death from pneumonia. After it had become possible to save lives it gradually became clear that survival of the patient was not necessarily followed by recovery of the brain and that the price of success, in saving lives, was a popula tion of cerebral cripples that was increasing at the rate of 1000 or more a year throughout the country. Although this figure has remained about the same for more than 20 years, there has been a great improvement in the amount of interest, the standard of care and the quality of results that are being achieved. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Fair. This book aims to demonstrate that legal complaints form the background for making business decisions and in the text legal principles are grouped according to their relevance to business. After surveying the sources of law, the court system and out of court settlements (where most legal disputes are resolved), the authors discuss the legal forms which a business can take, employment legislation, health and safety regulations, the sale of goods, product liability, constraints on advertising and insurance. Certain topics for example ways of protecting innovative ideas (patents, trademarks, designs), are discussed in more detail than is usual at this level. The role of trade and consumer associations, the Data Protection Act 1984 and the supply of credit are among other subjects examined. At the end of each chapter there are suggestions for further reading. and these references include not only academic texts, cases and statutes, but practical (and sometimes free) guides issued by, for example, trade associations, government departments, banks and the Equal Opportunities Commission. Case studies have been given in all chapters to illustrate the themes under discussion, sometimes with the addition of contemporary newspaper cuttings. Questions for discussion and problems for further consideration are given at the end of each chapter. Written for students following courses in business and management at degree level or equivalent, it will also be useful to students on BTEC Higher courses, post-experience or post-graduate management courses and professional courses in, for example, accountancy or marketing. This book is one of six titles in the Business in Context series which aims to provide business-centred, rather than discipline centred, coverage of the main subjects currently associated with a wide range of business studies programmes. A readable copy of the book which may include some defects such as highlighting and notes. Cover and pages may be creased and show discolouration.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Stress is a feature of all of our lives. The business of working in the health professions means that we are constantly being exposed to stress. That stress can sometimes be enriching and motivating. It has often been pointed out that stress can be positive or nega tive. When stress is positive, it rarely needs any further attention. When it is negative, it is a problem. The first aim of this book is to discuss the various sorts of stress that may be experienced by a variety of health professionals, including social workers, nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occu pational therapists and others. What they all have in common is that they work closely with other people - people who often have emotional problems or problems in living. Working with other people who are troubled in this way is indeed stressful. For too long it has been assumed that health professionals should 'get on with it' and put up with any stress that is involved in caring for others. The second aim of this book is to offer practical ways of coping with negative stress. These methods range from simple relaxation techniques, through meditation to methods that involve discussing stress with others: counselling, co-counselling and group work. All the methods described in this book have been used with a variety of health professionals, and not all of these methods will necessarily appeal to you. One of the fundamental points about stress is that it tends to affect each individual idiosyncratically. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. In the early years of this century a syndrome manifested by perceptuo-motor difficulties was described. During succeeding years further references were made to such a syndrome. In the first half of this century, however, children who suffered from such difficulties received little acknowledgement of their problems; few were neurologically assessed or offered remedia tion. Many school teachers were unaware of the existence of such problems and so were unable to make allowances for the gross and fine motor difficulties and perceptual problems encountered by some pupils during the course of the school day. Although many of these children were of average, and some of above average, ability, they were regarded as having little academic potential. Some were regarded as being 'educationally subnormal', a term applied at that time, because of perceptual problems which impaired reading ability and motor difficulties which affected their handwriting. It was not until the 1960s that interest in the difficulties experienced by these children began to gather momentum. Paediatricians, therapists, teachers and psychologists became involved in research, assessment and treatment. Children began to be handled more sympathetically in school. Parents learned of the existence of such difficulties and sought help for their affected children. Today medics, paramedics and educationalists are consulting each other, sharing knowledge and expertise to the advantage of children with perceptuo motor difficulties. Some problems resolve with maturity, though a proportion of these children have difficulties which persist into adolescence. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. In recent years, an expanding body of research evidence has begun to high light the value of nursing care. This evidence confirms what nurses have known for many years - that nursing care helps more patients to get better quicker. Patients value nurses as those members of the health care team that make them feel 'human' and ensure that their treatment is not more of an ordeal than their illness. The research also shows that nursing care is value for money. For the 29000 women who are diagnosed with breast cancer annuaIly, the value of nursing is self evident. Every woman should have access to the care, expertise and support of a breast care nurse. Nursing care is changing. Patients are rightly more informed about different treatment options and more assertive in seeking high quality services. They are much more likely to be aware that breast care nurses have a special service to offer and they are very likely to want help and support at horne as weIl as or instead of in hospital., The outreach work of breast care nurses provides a model for many other patient services where people need continuous support from before diagnosis, through diagnosis, surgery or treatment, to after care, rehabilitation and monitoring.
