Paperback. Etat : Very Good. "Introductory Statistics for Biology Students" tackles fundamental ideas and experimental design using the minimum of mathematics and should prove useful for life science students. Examples are taken from a variety of disciplines, including zoology, plant science and agriculture, pharmacology and medicine. The book explains the importance of statistical methods and seeks to communicate the concepts of sampling and experimentation in a rigorous yet sympathetic style. Practical points concerning student projects are also fully covered. The text uses numerous annotated illustrations from Minitab printouts to underline principles of data interpretation and analysis. This book should be of interest to first year undergraduates in life sciences (pharmacy, psychology, agriculture, medicine, veterinary science and dentistry). Postgraduates requiring a refresher in statistics should find it useful. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Etat : Fair. Seclusion as a concept is poorly understood and this is reflected in the literature on the topic, particularly from nursing authors. This has led to an emotionally charged altercation rather than academic debate, both within the literature and at conferences. But why bother learning about seclusion at all, particularly as it is used less and less within mental health? We would point out to those sceptical about the value of this book that seclusion is not only of interest as an intervention per se, but is valuable in reflecting a shifting ethos within care. For some reason, seclusion has been neglected; we believe that one reason is that it impinges upon widely held myths and beliefs within psychiatric practice. Questioning about seclusion uncovers uncomfortable facts and assumptions concerning the values underpinning today's mental health care approaches. Such uncomfortable questioning is often avoided for safer research pursuits. Also, we hold that this book is necessary in examining issues pertaining to seclusion practice. There is a gap within nursing knowledge in so far as seclusion is concerned, as our chapter on education upholds. Yet inquiries and litigation have highlighted the fact that seclusion practice must be more clearly understood as an intervention. At present, such understanding is erratic and far from useful in providing a higher standard of care. Practitioners need to make informed decisions regarding seclu sion, and this book aims to provide the necessary information on which to base these decisions. Paperback. Etat : Very Good. It is both a pleasure and a privilege to be invited to contribute a foreword to this book, which deserves - and needs - to be read by virtually everyone who is concerned with the treatment and subse quent welfare of the victims of severe injuries of the brain. Some friends, relatives and workmates might be helped by reading some parts of it, but, if the book has the effect it deserves to have on therapists, nurses, doctors, and others working in both hospitals and the community, these laymen will be suitably informed and assisted by one or more members of the necessarily large therapeutic team. The improvements in methods of resuscitation that have taken place during the last 40 years or so have abolished the previously fatalistic readiness to accept that a week or two in coma after a head injury was virtually a sentence to death from pneumonia. After it had become possible to save lives it gradually became clear that survival of the patient was not necessarily followed by recovery of the brain and that the price of success, in saving lives, was a popula tion of cerebral cripples that was increasing at the rate of 1000 or more a year throughout the country. Although this figure has remained about the same for more than 20 years, there has been a great improvement in the amount of interest, the standard of care and the quality of results that are being achieved. This useful book draws attention to diabetes mellitus, a common illness in elderly people, which can cause serious disability and should be diagnosed promptly and treated correctly. In this text the facts are well documented that the diagnosis may alarm old people and thus a full explanation must be given and the likely benefits of an adequate therapeutic regimen described. Drs Paul Knight and Colin Kesson are physicians intimately concerned with the day to day diagnosis and treatment of diabetes and they have enlisted the assistance of colleagues of outstanding ability, thus demonstrating the vital importance of teamwork in the control of this disease. The editors and contributors to this book use the body and mind approach held by doctors who are members of the Institute of Psychosexual Medicine, addressing the emotional and psychological factors in family planning. The issues addressed include: the unconsicous factors in contraceptive care; care of the younger patient; the man and the method; the sexual needs of people with disability; cultural perceptions and misconceptions; sterilization; and psychosexual problems in the contraceptive consultation. Guidance is given for the family planning consultation based on models. Doctors, midwives and nurses should find this approach to contraception both rewarding and efficient. The skills required to practice good contraceptive care involve an understanding of sexual feelings and personality. This book aims to provide the framework for the acquisition of skills for the practitioner. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Etat : Fair. Survey and study background In an effort to gain some answers on the 1ST capital investment (project selection) decision criteria used in practice, a survey was undertaken in 1990 of 80 American, British, Australian and New Zealand companies. A one-page survey form was used that provided 15 possible 1ST investment criteria, a means of indicating whether they are used or not, the percentage of projects to which each criterion is applied, and an overall ranking in terms of total project value for each criterion. The criteria are shown in Table 2.1. The criteria are categorized into financial, management, and development criteria. They were developed, first, through interviews with some 20 chief information officers (CIOs) in Britain and the United States. These CIOs were questioned on what criteria their organizations use in selecting 1ST investment projects, with the aim of developing a full list of the criteria used in practice. Secondly, the criteria and the form were tested and refined in a pilot study with some 12 companies. The criteria used in the survey and listed in Table 2.1 are primary level criteria. Paperback. Etat : Fair. It is now twelve years since Solubilization by Surface-Active Agents appeared. Since the publication of that monograph the subject has expanded rapidly as the unique potential of surfactants has become known to a wider circle of scientists. In a recent review Menger (Accounts of Chemical Research, 12 (1979) 111) estimated that since 1970 there have been over 2800 publications on micelles and micellization alone. The topic of catalysis in micellar media was in an early stage of development in 1968 but the growth in this subject has given rise to an excellent textbook by Fendler and Fendler. We have felt for some time that a revision of Solubilization by Surface-Active Agents was overdue. The book has been out of print for some time. Owing to pressure of other work, Professor P. H. Elworthy and Dr C. B. Macfarlane were unable to undertake the work of revision but while working together on an undergraduate textbook the present authors decided to set to work, realizing both the impossibility of producing a comprehensive textbook and the need to alter the scope of the book. Micellar solubilization occurs over a relatively small surfactant concentration range; because of this and because the phenomenon is never observed in isolation, we have extended the text to include surface activity, emulsions and suspensions and, as our emphasis is on formulation of medicinal products, to the of the toxicology of surface-active agents. It also aims to give information about the wide range of multidisciplinary and special ist professionals who can contribute in this field. BACKGROUND The ancient Greek word for drug has three meanings: a cure or remedy, a poison and a magical charm. This book will consider these meanings in the modern sense: drugs as medication and as a solution to problems; drugs as dangerous to health; and drugs as magical and hedonistic. In the recent past, policy and practice guidelines have often been based on a misunderstanding of the diversity and complexity of drug misuse. Professionals have confused different types of drug misuse and/ or attempted to compress all types into one narrowly defined cate gory, i.e. all drugs are good or bad. This is the first mistake: it is prefer able to go right back to the ancient Greeks and try to understand the range of different effects of drugs on different people. Practitioners first of all need to understand the complexity of drug misuse in order to develop realistic concepts and construct useful cate gories for assessment. After this, they are in a position to identify clearly the main risks and problems in the different categories and so to deter mine which type of intervention is most appropriate. Paperback. Etat : Very Good. In recent years, an expanding body of research evidence has begun to high light the value of nursing care. This evidence confirms what nurses have known for many years - that nursing care helps more patients to get better quicker. Patients value nurses as those members of the health care team that make them feel 'human' and ensure that their treatment is not more of an ordeal than their illness. The research also shows that nursing care is value for money. For the 29000 women who are diagnosed with breast cancer annuaIly, the value of nursing is self evident. Every woman should have access to the care, expertise and support of a breast care nurse. Nursing care is changing. Patients are rightly more informed about different treatment options and more assertive in seeking high quality services. They are much more likely to be aware that breast care nurses have a special service to offer and they are very likely to want help and support at horne as weIl as or instead of in hospital., The outreach work of breast care nurses provides a model for many other patient services where people need continuous support from before diagnosis, through diagnosis, surgery or treatment, to after care, rehabilitation and monitoring. Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Time-series analysis is an area of statistics which is of particular interest at the present time. Time series arise in many different areas, ranging from marketing to oceanography, and the analysis of such series raises many problems of both a theoretical and practical nature. I first became interested in the subject as a postgraduate student at Imperial College, when I attended a stimulating course of lectures on time-series given by Dr. (now Professor) G. M. Jenkins. The subject has fascinated me ever since. Several books have been written on theoretical aspects of time-series analysis. The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to the subject which bridges the gap between theory and practice. The book has also been written to make what is rather a difficult subject as understandable as possible. Enough theory is given to introduce the concepts of time-series analysis and to make the book mathematically interesting. In addition, practical problems are considered so as to help the reader tackle the analysis of real data. The book assumes a knowledge of basic probability theory and elementary statistical inference (see Appendix III). The book can be used as a text for an undergraduate or postgraduate course in time-series, or it can be used for self tuition by research workers. Throughout the book, references are usually given to recent readily accessible books and journals rather than to the original attributive references. Wold's (1965) bibliography contains many time series references published before 1959. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting.
