Traditionally, native women played important roles in their society, often determining the course of history, but as soon as Europens set foot on Indian soil, these women began losing ground. Denied their rightful positions of responsibility, excluded from tribal councils, and stripped of their property, Indian women felt sorely the chauvinism that whites forced upon their culture. As they lost status among their own people, many found themselves to be prized items in the eyes of white men, who needed local assistance in order to survive and profit from their ventures in the New World. Others experienced greater denigration at the hands of non-Indians. In the 19th century, after being placed on reservations and forced to learn the ways of whites, native women wielded newfound and traditional knowledge to surmount U.S. government efforts to obliterate Indian cultures. Today native women continue to take matters in hand by revitalizing their heritage and rewriting American history.».

About 500 years ago, their ancestors migrated southward from what is now northern Canada. In the Southwest, they learned from the Pueblos how to farm and later acquired livestock from Spanish colonists. The Tribes initial contact with Americans in the 1800s was less fruitful. Seeking control of the Navajos' land, the U.S. Army waged war on them in the 1860s. The tribe was defeated and compelled to relocate farther east in New Mexico which then became the Navajo Indian Reservation. The tribe thrived until the 1930's, when the federal government launched a program to halt the erosion of the Navajos' overgrazed land by slaughtering large numbers of their livestock. Although embittered by this experience, many Navajos served proudly in World War II; one select group, the Codetalkers, received special recognition. In recent years, the rapidly increasing tribal population has posed great challenges to Navajo society as its people seek to observe their traditional ways in the modern world.» Blank sticker inside cover.
