Procedures are becoming more complex to satisfy the need for comprehensive environmental assessments. There is an important and growing role for the geologist within these planning functions. Such a role has not been recognized in the past, but is now gaining acceptance. Comprehensive environmental assessments require much data concerning natural resources. Traditional geologic mapping techniques have failed to supply much data for planning purposes because they were not designed for this function. In response to requests, several new mapping methods have been undertaken by various agencies. A review of experiments, by the U.S. Geological Survey, Missouri Geological Survey, Illinois Geological Survey, and the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology, reveals a considerable variety of mapping methods. Many of these experiments have had only limited success because the needs of the planning function were not adequately understood. Even the most successful techniques used so far have generally not lived up to their potential because they continued to compartmentalize the total environment into existing disciplines.
