Hardcover. Etat : Poor. 1st Edition. Atlas Minor Atlas Gerardi Mercatoris a I. Hondo Plurimus aeneis tabulis auctus atque illustratus. Amsterodami excusum in aedibus Iudoci Hondii veneunt etiam apud Corneliu Nicolai item apud Ioannem Ianssoniu Arnhemi. [Atlas Minor by Gerard Mercator & Jodocus Hondius.] This is the 1607 edition, the Atlas Minor, printed and partially made by Jodocus Hondius, from Mercator s plates. This is about half of it, actually. All the plates have been removed. What remains is the vellum binding with handwritten title on the spine G. Mercator / Atlas Minor and several hundred text pages, in Latin, in a neat stack. Several of them are still hanging by threads from the original spine, so it s not all loose pages. The complete book has 152 maps. This book has none. Whoever removed the maps managed, at least, not to destroy all the pages. The text is in Latin and includes the publication date of MDCVII (1607) on the verso of the first surviving leaf. Also the index and several blocks of consecutive text pages about Belgium and Italy mostly. But mostly, every other leaf is gone. The final page is page 654 which beings the section on Virginia and Florida. The book measures slightly larger than 7 x 10 inches. The pages are about 7 x 9 inches. There is a bookplate on the inside front cover showing a winged charioteer driving a team of horses. Small script-engraved motto beneath the horses, En avant toujours en avant. Beneath the chariot, Bibl Hammer Stockholm. This is the bookplate of Christian Hammer (1818-1905), according to google, so the plates were likely still with the book at that time. With its plates, this is one of the great collectible books of all time, one of the first widely available Atlases ever printed, and with maps showing the New World for the first time. Without its plates, it is a poignant, rare, and still quite beautiful (the typography is distinctive). Please email for photos.
