Her works inspire others in their own creative efforts. The gentle, irascible, passionate, poetic voice of Emily Carr resonates through her writings today, even more strongly than before. Her attitudes and observations were ahead of her time on native issues, because of the important role native Northwest Coast culture played in her art and life, and on feminism, as a woman who surmounted gender prejudice to achieve her goals with such distinction. Her deep commitment to nature in all its manifestations speaks to the environmental dilemmas that face us now. Thc Emily Carr Omnibus includes all her major published works. Here are her much-loved early stories, ranging for the gentle recollections of Klee Wyck and The Book of Small, to the acerbic The House of All Sorts, as well as the lesser-known Pause and The Heart of a Peacock. Here also are more personal works: Growing Pains, her autobiography, and her collected journals, Hundreds and Thousands." - Publisher. Size: 4to. Collectible.

Inuksuit: Silent Messengers of the Arctic; Norman Hallendy, with photographs by the author; Douglas & McIntyre, Vancouver/Toronto and University of Washington Press, Seattle, 2000. First printing. From the blurb The mysterious stone figures known as Inuksuit can be found throughout the circumpolar world. Built from whatever stones are at hand, each one is unique. Inuksuit are among the oldest and most important objects placed by humans upon the vast Arctic landscape and have become a familiar symbol of the Inuit and of their homeland. In author Norman Hallendy's forty years of travels throughout the Arctic, he developed lasting friendships with a number of Inuit elders. Through them, he learned that inuksuit are a nuanced, complex and vital form of communication. Some are navigational or directional aids, offer hunting information, or indicate caches of food or supplies. Same are practical helpers that once assisted in hunting caribou or luring geese. Other stone structures that look very much like inuksuit were objects of veneration, indicating places of power or the abode of spirits. Although most inuksuit appear singly, sometimes they are arranged in sequences spanning great distances or are grouped to mark a specific place. Others define the ghostly geography of the spiritual landscape. Hallendy's dramatic colour photographs of many different kinds of inuksuit and objects of veneration not only capture a sense of wonder and power but reveal the Arctic landscape in all its haunting beauty. With 52 colour photographs. This large format book, 127 pages measuring 240mm X 265mm is in fine condition in a near-fine dust jacket that is now in a protective mylar wrap. This large volume may require additional postage.
