"This present analysis, written by a young and inexperienced critic a little less than a decade ago, is by no means liable of revision since it would probably be transformed into another text or into a discussion with its own self. Therefore, it is set forth exactly as it was produced with its ingenuity and eventful flaws or incorrections. The texts already disclosed by other publications, at different periods, may have conferred it a certain objectivity releasing the author from new and successive reelaborations. Anyhow, the crucial question would be to continue specifying and fathoming the analysis of the works and thus avoiding the rigid limits of the neoconcret movement. This has, from 1975 on, become more and more notorious, or, if not, more and more cited., acknowledged and appreciated. Opportunism and longing for bygone days aside, the fact seems to me as being positive. Along the history of the Brazilian culture, Neoconcretism was, most surely, one of the few moments at which we took it upon ourselves to defy Rimbaud's challenge so as to be absolutely modern. Of course I well know that the moment exults the crisis of the modern, long before this, however, is my daily experience before the dreadful ignorance and incomprehension, rejection and resistance, even panic before the modern that still characterizes our sphere of art. And this is almost 30 years after Neoconcretism, 80 from Cubism and 120 from Cézanne. The Neoconcretist manifesto is clear: it proposes to take a critical position in the face of the mechanistic deviations of concrete art. But it also proposes to defend non figurative art, of a geometric language, against and kind of irrationalist tendencies. Dada and Surrealism are nominally mentioned as retrocessive movements. Its basic reference points are Mondrian, Pevsner and Malevich. The text defines what the constructivist ideologies with their evolutionist interpretations of Art History, their proposals of social integration and their productive theories. Neoconcretism remains interested in the type of positiveness found at the core of the constructivist tradition - art as an instrument of social construction."
