Hardcover. Etat : Good. Klaus-Peter Schmolke (illustrateur). 223, [1] pages. Footnotes. Illustrations. Index of Ships. Cover has some wear and soiling. No dust jacket present. The warships of the World War II era German Navy are among the most popular subjects in naval history with many books devoted to the subject. The six ships from Emden to Nuremberg were built between the wars. Primarily intended for commerce-raiding, the war gave them few opportunities for such employment, although they did provide useful support for key naval operations in the Baltic and North Sea. This is the sixth volume in the Warships of the Kriegsmarine series, Contents include Data, Armour, Armament, Fire Control System, Machinery, Refits, The Spahkreuzer Programme, Scale Drawings, Emden, Konigsberg, Karlsruhe, Koln, Leipzig, Nurnberg, and Conclusions. Gerhard Koop served in both the Kriegesmarine and the postwar Bundesmarine, and became one of German's leading authorities on warship design. Klaus-Peter Schmolke was well-known for the detail and accuracy of his technical drawings. Geoffrey Brooks was an experienced author, researcher and historian. He translated and edited Hirschfeld - The Secret Diary of a U-Boat NCO and Fips - Legendary U-Boat Commander 1915-18. He was the author of Hitler's Nuclear Weapons. He has translated for publication 32 military books from the German for United Kingdom publishers Pen & Sword Books, Greenhill Books/Frontline Books and Chatham Publishing. Although much has been written about the German Navy by English-speaking authors, few of their books grasp an understanding of the technical side of German shipbuilding programs. This volume on German light cruisers is the latest in a series of books by German naval historians Gerhard Koop and Klaus-Peter Schmolke that fills this gaping void. The authors take full advantage of primary research materials to produce a quality, in-depth technical volume that strips away misinformation and provides a balanced understanding of the light cruisers and their mission. The major ship components--hull, armor protection, main armament, secondary armament, etc.--are followed by each ship's chronological history. The Treaty of Versailles allowed Germany to replace its old cruisers, and the first such new vessel, Emden, was built in the early 1920s to a design based on the last wartime classes. A new approach was taken in the five members of the succeeding Königsberg and Leipzig classes with triple gun turrets and hybrid diesel/turbine propulsion systems. Scores of photographs and line drawings, detailed indexes, and an impressive bibliography complete this notable volume. Presumed First U.S. Edition, First printing.
