Original Blue cloth hardcover. Etat : Very Good Plus. Reprint. 1970. Reprint of 1876 first edition. 2 vol. set; xxxii, 416pp. & [ii], 439pp. "The materials submitted to my attention consisted of two sets, namely those which had been left by Dr Whewell heimself, and those which were lent to me by his friends and correspondants. . A large collection of the letters written to Dr Whewell exists; but there is something capricious as to the rule of preservation. . The number is about 3,500; with out naming writers who are still living, many of them are from such men as Brewster, De Morgan, Faraday, Forbes, Hallam, Muchison, Quetelet, Sedgwick, Sheepshanks, Stephen, Thirlwell. These letters are now disposed in alephabetical order and catalogued. . The second set of materials submitted to my attention consisted of letters written by Dr Whewell and lent to me by his cprrespondents, or by their representatives. . On the whole I have examined more than 1000 letters written by Dr Whewell, including those to Mr Jones and to Mr Hare. . In the first volume it has been my intention to record every deition of every book, and also to notice, at least briefly, every article or memoir,of whihc Dr Whewell was the author. . It will be observed that chronological order has been followed, . I have grouped together all the publication which related to a single well-defined subject, as Mechanics, the Tides, Moral Philosophy, and Poetry. . my second volume; this consists of letters written by Dr Whewell. From the large collection entrusted to me I have selected those which throw most light on the character and pursuits of of the writer; . The letters which constitute my second volume belong rather to the earlier than to the later period of Dr Whewell's life. . The letter's are arranged chronologically, and the whole series contains a good account of the many subjects at various times gained the attention of a busy writer: . The letters contain the names of many persons: these may be considered to form three classes. . In the first class . Arago, Brewster, Colridge, Laplace, Macjintosh, Malthus, Mill, Ricardo, Thirlwall, Wordsworth, Young. . In the second class we may put the names of persons of University distinction or position; . The third class of names consist of such as for various reasons there may be some difficulty in identifying . . ". Both books in excellent condition, no inscriptions. PLEASE NOTE: Heavyish set so a little extra may be needed for shipping to non-UK customers.
