Soft cover. Etat : Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. 1993. [49pp]. Colour images. "The ambition of this exhibition and catalogue is to set the Hamadân carpet in its rightful place as one of the finest weaving areas in Persia. For a long time most people have scorned when Hamadâns came under discussion, claiming that they were not of the same artistic merit as other famous rugregions. I hope this exhibition will change that. ? Our other goal is to inform the public of all the different villages and districts that together make up the Hamadân province. Somewhere between 600-800 villages constitute the area. Of course, we will never be able to differentiate between them all, but we can conclude the main characteristics of the various districts and the most important villages. Since virtually all these rugs have the same weaving technique i.e. symmetric knots and a single shoot of wefts, the relative difference in knot density, weft, colour, spin and ply of the foundation, height of pile, wooltype etc. becomes very important. For that reason we have chosen to illustrate the reverse side of all 43 pieces as well as making complete technical analysis'. Small pointers in the general description should also assist the reader in roughly deciding where a Hamadân originates from. ? So far, most of these rugs have simply been given the name Hamadân and we think it fair that they are not given their proper name. In Hamadân town itself, rugs were not produced until 1912 when Cecil Edwards (see Bibl.) assisted in setting up the specifications for how such a rug should be constructed. The rugs were given the name Alvând after the mountain just outside Hamadân. These pieces have nothing to do with the village production. They resemble coarse Sarouks in style - are double wefted, have alternatively depressed warps and have symmetric knots in densities 150-200.000/m? With these words, let us cast ourselves into the intriguing world that these "primitive" pieces constitute. And let us hope that in the future we may read in books and catalogues entries such as "magnificent antique Enjilâs", "superb semiantique Chenar" and "wonderful Kalajük rug". Book in excellent condition. No inscriptions.
