Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The Fiat G.55 Centauro fighter was designed by Giuseppe Gabrielli at the Fiat factory in 1942 and flown in the spring of the same year (April 30). The plane was to be a response to the demand for an interceptor capable of operating at high altitudes, which was dictated by the increasing intensit…y of Allied air raids on Italian cities and military infrastructure. A total of 130 copies of this machine were produced. Most Fiats G.55 were stationed in bases in northern Italy, from which they defended industrial plants located in these regions. First, the cockpit armor was too weak, which excluded the machine from the role of a fighter intercepting heavily defended Allied bombers. Therefore, in the summer of 1944, a modified version of the Do 335 - marked with the letter…"B"- was developed. The main difference was to be an armored pilot's cockpit with a new, easier to manufacture windscreen. The front wheel had larger tire. To be able to retract it without any changes in the landing gear bay construction, it was rotated around the leg axis by 450 during the retraction. The rest of the equipment and weapons were to be the same as in the case of the Do 335A-1. The developed version was designated Do 335B-1, but it was quickly abandoned in favor of heavily armed versions B-2 and B-3, known as Zerstoerer. The prototypes of the version B-2 were Do 335M-13 and M-14 powered, like the A-1, by the DB 603E (front) and DB-603QE (rear) engines, but with significantly reinforced armament. The 15 mm MG 151/15 cannons above the engine were replaced with a 20 mm MG 151/20, and the wings were fitted with two 30 mm MK 103 cannons with 70 rounds per barrel. Her keel was laid in November 1955 at the Brest Arsenal Ch. Atlantique in St. Nazaire, and she was launched two years later - on December 21st, 1957. Together with the twin "F…och", it was built on the basis of a project developed from the beginning of the 1950s, which included almost all of then novelties that were introduced in the construction of this type of ships. Therefore, she received, among others: a sloped flight deck with two lifts, mirror systems facilitating the approach to landing, means of observation enabling early detection of surface units and means of air attack, and modern catapults adapted to work with jet aircrafts with a large take-off mass. The length of the flight deck was 257 meters, the main runway was 165.5 metres long and 29.5 meters wide, with a deviation from the centre of the ship by 8 degrees. The hangar below it was 180 meters long and 22 meters wide. In more than forty years of service, which began on November 22, 1961, the "Clemenceau" performed countless tasks in both European and Pacific waters. She supported the activities of the land forces, incl. in former French colonies and during nuclear tests. It was built at Fore River (Quincy) Shipyard in Massachusetts in 19391942 period and was one of the four South Dakota type battleships. The crew serving on USS Massachusetts humorously… nicknamed their ship the Big Mamie.Building process started on July 1939, the launching took place on the 23rd of September 1941. The godmother of the ship was a formers Navy Secretary Charles Francis Adams wife. The equipping took more than half of year and on 12th of May 1942 the unit was introduced into the service. The first commander of the ship was captain Francis E. M. Whiting.Service of USS Massachusetts from the beginning teemed with interesting events. After finishing all tests, trials and crew trainings the ship left home waters in October 1942. It was assigned to invasion fleet formed for securing the landing of allied forces in North Africa.This is when the ship gained its fame after winning the battle with unfinished French battleship Jean Bart stationed in port of Casablanca. The damage caused by USS Massachusetts was so severe that French unit was never finished and didnt enter the operational service. During that fight titular ship also caused a lot of damage to the ports infrastructure and damaged some transport units.The crucial event of units service was the battle with group of French warships which managed to escape from Casablanca. Massachusetts together with assisting cruisers sunk the French cruiser Primauguet as well as two destroyers: Boulonnais and Fougueux; another one Malin was severely damaged.The battleship took its further service on the Pacific waters, quickly becoming the work horse of the fleet. It took part in dozens of different operations against Japanese forces. USS Massachusetts participated in countless escorts of aircraft carriers, supported the forces landings with its guns, covered the convoys with the AA fire. The battleship repeatedly shelled the Japanese positions many of them on home islands. For its service the unit was awarded with eleven Battle Stars gaining the label of remarkably merited battleship during the fight against Japan.After the war the ship continued its service on Pacific for a short period of time. In March 1947 it was transferred to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet based in Norfolk, where it stayed until June 1962. On that year the unit was discharged from the US Navy. Originally there was a plan to send the battleship to the scrapyard but thanks to the efforts of war veterans and Massachusetts state inhabitants the deserved unit was saved.In the year 1965 the battleship was moved to Fall River where after proper adaptation and stating it the garden of remembrance of fallen WW2 soldiers it was open for tourists.Today the ship is permanently anchored in Battleship Cove place known as the biggest cluster of monument ships. It is grouped with USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. destroyer and USS Lionfish submarine.USS Massachusetts is preserved in mint condition and it is the great relic which allows the visitors to feel the strength of the unit and get to know the armament, architecture and construction of WW2 era battleships. The decision to start the production of the Curtiss P-40 fighter was made primarily due to the relatively low airframe price and the possibility of launching it almost immediately (based on Curtiss P-36s ready fuselages). The P-40 did not have a turbocharger, but despite this the requirements we…re constantly increasing, especially when it comes to the maximum speed. It was requested to raise it by over 100 km/h (up to 580 km/h). It required a number of construction changes e.g. new exhaust pipes, new shape and size of the air intake to the carburetor at the top of the engine cover, moving forward the coolers under the nose. After the tests in the NACA wind tunnel it turned out that these changes were not enough. The plane underwent further aerodynamic refinements, using, among others, smooth riveting and retractable tail ring.
