It seems essential that analysts and candidates grapple with the challenges this change in society presents. As we struggle in our psychoanalytic societies to diversify our membership and broaden our understanding of difference, this collection offers an opportunity for further discussion and study of one of the most important issues of our time. The opening essay by editor Shari Thurer provides a clear overview of recent cultural changes and the evolution of thinking about gender identification by the American Psychoanalytic Association. Next is an autobiographical essay by long-term non-binary individual Robin Haas plus a clinical reflection on Haas' contribution by Rita Teusch. A recent account of an individual becoming non-binary from Francesca Spence is followed by the reactions of their parents, L. Harry Spence and Robin Ely. After that are psychoanalytic thoughts about the body and gender by Malkah Notman and reflections on gender from Dan Jacobs. The book ends with an extensive bibliography on the subjects of transsexuality and non-binary gender by Oren Gozlan Beyond the Binary: Essays on Gender introduces readers to current ideas about gender fluidity and choice, as well as giving voice to those who have chosen to be non-binary. This is a must-read for all practising clinicians that will help broaden their perspective on this growing issue. This is the fourth publication sponsored by the Library Committee of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and the first published by Phoenix. AUTHOR: Shari Thurer is a psychoanalytically trained psychologist practicing in Boston and an adjunct associate professor at Boston University. A cutting-edge selection of essays to explore the growth of the incidence and prevalence of non-binary gender. With contributions from psychoanalytic experts and those with lived experience: Robin J. Ely, Francesca Ely-Spence, Oren Gozlan, Robin Haas, Daniel H. Jacobs, Malkah T. Notman, Lewis Harwood Harry Spence, Rita K. Teusch and Shari Thurer. All around us, the world is splintering into "us" versus "them": Brexit, Donald Trump vs Hillary Clinton, the Syrian Civil War, the return of totalitarian parties in Europe to electoral success, and the rise of the alt-right and white supremacists in the US. Neofascism is on the rise worldwide with worrying echoes of the past whilst politicians scrap amongst themselves over conflicting ideologies. Dr Jonathan Sklar brings his razor-sharp analytic skills out of the consulting room and into society. His searing insights into why our world is fragmenting around us need to be read and need to be heard. It is time for psychoanalysis to shine a light on the wider world and go against the current desire for quick soundbites and easy answers and, instead, engage our consciousness to truly understand, challenge, and engage with the political landscape. Jonathan tells us, "Each generation must pick up the political thought and action of confronting fascism." This book is his rallying cry to our generation and is a deeply relevant, thoughtful, and important book for our times. Today sees the rise of nationalism, the return of totalitarian parties in Europe to electoral success, and the rise of the alt-right and white supremacists in the US. Thus, there is urgency for psychoanalysts, with their understanding of cruelty, sadomasochism, perversion, and other mental mechanisms, to speak out. Jonathan Sklar has risen to the challenge with this timely, thought-provoking, and, at times, upsetting work. Dark Times starts with a look at European history in terms of monuments and mourning, before moving into storytelling and the elision of thought and history at this current time, including harrowing detail of the brutalities inflicted by ISIS on the Yazidi, and concludes with a meditation on the relationship between cruelty in the early environment and hatred of the other within society, with particular focus on racism in the US. Sklar goes against the grain of brief sound bites, which are an aid to quickly pass over painful knowledge. Instead, he goes into detail to give extremely dark, horrid occurrences, and the human beings on the receiving end, respect and understanding, which enables the reader greater access to allowing unconscious things to be made more conscious, highlighting the quality of humanity in human beings. Also, listening to these stories enables us to become more aware, not only of what is going on over there, but also what is happening here, because in our increasingly joined-up world, here is always implicated and affected too. By ridding ourselves of the illusions of our political times, we can find greater freedom to think, develop, challenge, and create hope, for the future of our children and our grandchildren, as well as for ourselves. Dark Times is a timely, thought-provoking, and, at times, upsetting work that is a must- read for all those looking for a deeper understanding of today's world. AUTHOR: Dr Jonathan Sklar, MBBS, FRCPsych is a training and supervising psychoanalyst of the British Psychoanalytical Society. Originally trained in psychiatry at Friern and the Royal Free Hospitals, he later trained in adult psychotherapy at the Tavistock Clinic, London. For many years, he was consultant psychotherapist and head of the psychotherapy department at Addenbrooke's and Fulbourne hospitals in Cambridge. He now works in full-time analytic practice in London. As well as lecturing widely across the world, he has taught psychoanalysis annually in South Africa for over ten years, termly in Chicago for ten years until 2018, as well as regularly across Eastern Europe. From 2007 to 2011, he was vice president of the European Psychoanalytic Federation, with special responsibility for seminars for recently qualified analysts as well as new analytic groups in East Europe. Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : new. Paperback. A short and timely book, inviting you to take part in a much larger conversation about how women are treated and seen in psychoanalysis. A place where misogyny hides in plain sight, unchallenged and unnoticed. A must-read for all psychoanalysts, psychotherapists and academics working in related fields. Get your copy and join the debate! In psychoanalysis, misogyny hides in plain sight, seemingly above and beyond the usual conventions of workplace etiquette or even a vague awareness of sexism. It is commonplace in psychoanalytic literature and in the presentation of case studies for a description of the female client's attractiveness to be given as a diagnosis rather than an opinion, for the word 'feminine' to be used as a synonym for submission, for psychosexual development to still miss the glaringly important stage of menstruation, for women to still be described in terms of losing a penis but gaining a baby not a vagina or clitoris and for the fundamental experiences of pregnancy and birth to be overlooked. Ironically for a field that's main currency is reflection, the different treatment of women is bypassed as misogyny is institutionalised in psychoanalysis. The book reflects the author's experience in the world of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy as a trainee, supervisee, student, teacher, psychotherapist and supervisor in various institutions, and as a former CEO of a psychotherapy training organisation. It is a collection of five essays inviting you to join an inclusive conversation about why psychoanalysis is the way it is and, through a case study, experience the impact this misogyny has on the treatment of women. Misogyny in Psychoanalysis highlights what's at risk for the practice of psychoanalysis / psychotherapy and, most importantly, for those seeking help when institutionalised misogyny goes by unchallenged. AUTHOR: Michaela Chamberlain trained at The Bowlby Centre and also studied in the Psychoanalytic Unit at UCL. Shortly after qualifying at The Bowlby Centre in 2016, she started teaching Freud and attachment theory and became CEO of The Bowlby Centre. She worked as an honorary psychotherapist in two NHS Trusts for several years. She has presented clinical papers at public forums and has been published in the journal Attachment: New Directions in Psychotherapy and Relational Psychoanalysis. She is currently carrying out a doctoral research project on a psychoanalytic reading of gendered blood in live art and psychoanalytic writing at Roehampton University. She works in private practice as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and is a supervisor and training therapist. Misogyny in Psychoanalysis is a short and timely book, inviting you to take part in a much larger conversation about how women are treated and seen in psychoanalysis, where misogyny hides in plain sight unchallenged and unnoticed. It is important to point out that these essays are about character types; it is not to suggest that all borderlines, narcissists or manic depressives are the same. Everyone is an individual and are who they are for many different reasons. What they have in common is a typical relation between their subjectivity and the world they inhabit. In other words, Christopher Bollas has identified the axioms that these individuals share. Following a discussion of the features of each type, the axioms are delivered in the character's own voice. By placing ourselves within their own logic, we can begin to identify and empathise with them. At the root of all character disorders there is mental pain and each disorder is an intelligent attempt to solve an existential problem. If the clinician can grasp their specific intelligence and help the analysand to understand this, then a natural process of healing can begin. Three Characters is a masterclass based on decades of lectures presented to psychoanalysts, analytical psychologists, and psychotherapists, and is a must-read for all psychoanalytic enthusiasts. AUTHORS: Christopher Bollas is a psychoanalyst and Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society and the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies. Scharff with down-to-earth advice on how to run a practice, the pleasures and pains of psychotherapy, vivid clinical stories of success and failure, and discussion on the work/life balance. This book is for all psychotherapists, trainees, and those with an interest in therapy. Nina Coltart's classic work, How to Survive as a Psychotherapist, was written over a quarter of a century ago and yet still resonates today with sage advice for the aspiring and established psychotherapist. This reissue contains a new Foreword from celebrated psychoanalyst David E. Scharff and an updated Further Reading section. Not simply a "how to" manual, this compact book is an amalgam of down-to-earth practicality about assessment, the pleasures of psychotherapy as opposed to analysis, details of how to run a practice, vivid clinical stories which don't necessarily turn out well, discussions of Buddhism, and an autobiographical finale on the balance between life and work, including Coltart's choice to live alone. Written in deceptively simple language, it reads easily and encourages beginners, but its backbone is the accrued wisdom for a career containing "survival-with-enjoyment" that offers new perspectives to both mid-career and experienced therapists and teachers. The professional autobiographical quality of the book reveals a lot about Coltart: her love of psychotherapy over full analysis and the number of strictures in analysis that she feels bind rather than guide. She describes the first years, in training and beyond, as full of anxiety: trying to get things right whilst an inner critical voice and the judgement of supervisors and teachers hangs over it all. Slowly, as time goes by, the ability to relax into a career with confidence in one's own voice, knowledge, and intuition leads to a capacity for enjoyment of what can seem to outsiders a grim profession dealing only with suffering. Coltart's book celebrates psychotherapy and its practitioners, and is full of interesting and practical advice that both experienced and novice psychotherapists will find invaluable. This enduring classic has stood the test of time and should be a feature of every aficionado's bookshelf. AUTHOR: Nina Coltart was "one of the most admired and liked psychoanalysts in Britain. For 35 years she was an active member of the British and international psychoanalytic community and she played a major role in extending the influence of analytic ideas outside that world." (A. H. Brafman, "Obituary: Nina Coltart", Independent, 18 August 1997) A classic work from Nina Coltart revitalised with a new foreword by David E. A comprehensive introduction into the incidence, causes, and consequences of depression and how psychotherapy can help with its management and treatment. Aimed at practising psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, counsellors, and all professionals in the mental health field, it will also be of interest to anyone wanting to know more about depression. This book attempts to do justice to the depth and complexity of depression as to its causes and its treatment in psychotherapy. It challenges the reductive medical view of depression as a serotonin deficiency resulting in a collection of undesirable symptoms to be dispatched with antidepressants or CBT exercises. Rather, it locates the origins of depression in childhood adversity, primarily caused by unattuned, cold, critical, hostile or abusive caregiving. Insecure attachment interacts with other elements of a stressful life history as well as with genetic makeup to pave the way for depression. Such a childhood has long-term impacts on the setting of the stress and threat responses of the nervous system. Depression fundamentally indicates a weak and non-resilient sense of self, coupled with limited capacities for trust and either autonomy or intimacy in relationships. These are the issues that must be tackled in psychotherapy. Since depression carries a message for the sufferer, it must be investigated for its meaning. Why has the individual withdrawn from life and what are they being asked to change in how they live and relate? Before this reparative and creative phase of therapy can begin, however, we must remember that depression is not just 'low' mood but also 'stuck' mood. Rigid beliefs and processes that block therapeutic engagement can be gently questioned by helping the client see that they are held by only one part of the self, whereas other 'for growth' parts carry hope and a willingness to play and explore. Overall, it is crucial in working with depression to see and to relate to the client as a whole person; not simply a bundle of cognitive shortcomings to be corrected, but as an emotional, organismic, relational, existential and spiritual being. Depression: An Introduction presents a biopsychosocial model, combining developmental and attachment perspectives with genetics and neurobiology. Its therapeutic orientation is humanistic and integrative but has much to offer anyone wanting to know more about this widely known but little understood condition. AUTHOR: Barbara Dowds is a humanistic and integrative psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer, and lives near Dublin. She is author of Beyond the Frustrated Self (Karnac, 2014) and Depression and the Erosion of the Self in Late Modernity (Routledge, 2018), and contributed to The Divided Therapist (Ed. R. Tweedy, 2020). In a previous life, she was a university lecturer and researcher in molecular biology. Otto Rank, Sigmund Freud's closest colleague in Vienna during the formative years of psychoanalysis, published the essay 'A Dream That Interprets Itself' in 1910. It was praised highly by Freud, and the seminal essay now appears for the first time in English with an expertly crafted introduction from Robert Kramer about Rank and his work. Sigmund Freud hired Otto Rank as his secretary and funded Rank's PhD in literature at the University of Vienna. In 1910, at age 26, Rank published 'A Dream That Interprets Itself'. Freud could not praise the essay highly enough; impressed by Rank's erudition, Freud invited his protege to contribute two chapters, on poetry and myth, in 1914 to The Interpretation of Dreams. Thereafter, Rank's name would appear under Freud's on the title page of the foundational text of psychoanalysis for the next fifteen years. Grateful for Freud's generosity, Rank published a stream of articles and books advancing psychoanalytic thinking into almost every area of the arts and humanities, thus demonstrating to Freud's critics that the validity of psychoanalysis did not hinge solely on his autobiographical work The Interpretation of Dreams. Rank died in 1939 and his work fell out of favor until a renaissance of interest beginning in the 1970s. This is the first English translation of Rank's masterpiece of dream interpretation, originally published in 1910 as Ein Traum, der sich selbst deutet in the journal Jahrbuch fuer Psychoanalytische und Psychopathologische Forschungen, 2(2): 465540. It is accompanied by an in-depth introduction from editor Robert Kramer, the world's only Rankian psychologist. The book is essential reading for all psychoanalytic scholars, practitioners, and historians, and those interested in dream analysis. AUTHOR: Freud considered Otto Rank to be the most brilliant of his disciples. With access to the master's most intimate thoughts and feelings, Rank contributed two chapters to The Interpretation of Dreams in 1914. His name would appear below Freud's on the title page for the next 15 years. Nicola Abel-Hirsch's encyclopaedic knowledge of her subject shines through in this easy-to-read primer. Perfect for students, academics, and professionals in the mental health, humanities, and social sciences fields, it also provides an overview of the whole of his work for people with some familiarity with his writings. Bion's life spanned key events in the twentieth century. Born in India in 1897, he came to boarding school in England aged 8 and at 18 fought in the tanks in World War One. He trained as a doctor between the wars and, in his World War Two work for the army, he was an innovator. After the war, he became a patient of Melanie Klein, qualified as a psychoanalyst, and was part of an extraordinary period in psychoanalysis of work with psychotic mechanisms in patients. In the late 1950s, he identified the configuration container/contained as being at the heart of human development. He looked outside of psychoanalysis to philosophers, scientists, mathematicians, and even theo-mystical thinkers. His work evolved radically throughout the 1960s and, at age 70 when many would be thinking of slowing down, he emigrated to California and began to travel internationally, giving lectures and supervisions across three continents. After Freud, Bion appears to be the most quoted psychoanalyst of our time and this book provides the opportunity, even for those familiar with his work, to gain insight into its sheer breadth, showcased so brilliantly in this slim volume. As author of Bion: 365 Quotes, Nicola Abel-Hirsch's immersion in Bion's vast uvre has enabled a comprehensive introduction to Bion and his work. Her lightness of touch, whilst retaining the necessary depth, makes it a joy to read. Bion and his work can be somewhat enigmatic but Abel-Hirsch's understanding offers the ideal introduction to the man and his work. AUTHOR: Nicola Abel-Hirsch is a training analyst of the British Psychoanalytical Society, and works in full-time psychoanalytical practice. She has given theoretical and clinical papers on Bion in the UK; Taiwan (annually 20052012); the USA; and Europe. From 2013 to 2015 she was the visiting professor at the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex. She is the author of Bion: 365 Quotes (2019), and editor of Hanna Segal's last book Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (2007). Under the auspices of Understanding Primitive Mental States NYC, she chairs an ongoing series of seminars on Bion's later lectures, seminars and supervisions. A clear, concise, and enjoyable introduction to the wide-ranging work of Wilfred R. Bion, a true pioneer in the psychoanalytic world. The unknown self is the core of the personality considered as a potential to become something yet to be determined. To be already known is to be determined prior to and independently of our presence in our lives. At the outset of the process of taking form, the individual is, in a sense, a stranger to self and to others. The more this is the case, the greater the openness of the process of self-formation and the more marked the role of freedom from predetermination in that process. Freedom from predetermination exists along three dimensions: the free movement of thoughts and ideas or inner freedom; the freedom to relate, which is also the freedom not to relate; and freedom in relating, which is the possibility of maintaining secure self-boundaries in relations with others. In exploring freedom understood in this way, Professor Levine considers such topics as: the nature of inner freedom and its relationship to deliberation and choice; stranger anxiety and its connection to group dynamics and social connection; the internal factors that enable us to make the decisions that shape our lives and through our actions realise the ends embedded in our decisions; how our memories shape our thought processes and therefore the choices we make and the lives we lead that result from them; what makes it possible for us to live comfortably with and depend on people we do not know; concern for the welfare of strangers and how our welfare can be secure in a world where we do not care about others and they do not care about us. AUTHOR: David P. Levine is emeritus professor in the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. He holds a PhD in economics from Yale University and a Certificate in Psychoanalytic Scholarship from the Colorado Center for Psychoanalytic Studies. He has published extensively in the fields of economics, political economy, and psychoanalysis. The style and writing interweave passion and reflection, animation and containment, radical hope and tragedy to reflect the dilemmas of our collective crisis. The authors model a relational approach in their styles of writing and in the book's structure. Four chapters, each with a strikingly original voice and insight, form the core of the book, encased either end by two jointly written chapters. In contrast to a psychology that focuses on individual behaviour change, the authors use a transdisciplinary mix of approaches (depth psychology and psychotherapy, earth systems, deep ecology, cultural sociology, critical history, group and institutional outreach) to bring into focus the predicament of this period. While the last decade required a focus on climate denial in all its manifestations (which continues in new ways), a turning point has now been reached. Increasingly extreme weather across the world is making it impossible for simple avoidance of the climate threat. Wendy Hollway, Paul Hoggett, Chris Robertson, and Sally Weintrobe address how climate psychology illuminates and engages the life and death challenges that face terrestrial life. This book will appeal to three core groups. First, mental health and social care professionals wanting support in containing and potentially transforming the malaise. Second, activists wanting to participate in new stories and practices that nurture their engagement with the present social and cultural crisis. Third, those concerned about the climate emergency, wanting to understand the deeper context for this dangerous blindness. AUTHORS: Wendy Hollway is Emeritus Professor of Psychology, Honorary Fellow of the British Psychological Society, and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. She co-founded the UK psycho-social network, has been active in the European psycho-social network, and co-edits the Palgrave "Studies in the Psychosocial" series. She edits a monthly Digest for Climate Psychology Alliance. Paul Hoggett is a psychoanalytical psychotherapist and a training therapist at the Severnside Institute for Psychotherapy. He is Emeritus Professor of Social Policy at the University of the West of England, Bristol, where he co-founded the Centre for Psycho-Social Studies. His research focused on the emotional dynamics of race, class, community, and governance. With Adrian Tait he set up the Climate Psychology Alliance in 2012. In 2019, Paul edited a collection of CPA research papers Climate Psychology: On Indifference to Disaster (Palgrave Macmillan). Chris Robertson has been a psychotherapist and trainer since 1978. He was the co-creator of Borderlands and the Wisdom of Uncertainty, which in 1989 became the subject of a BBC documentary. In 1988, he co-founded Re-Vision, an integrative and transpersonal psychotherapy training with an ecopsychology component. He retired from Re-Vision in 2018. He was chair of the Climate Psychology Alliance, with which he still works. Sally Weintrobe has spent her professional life practising as a psychoanalyst. She is a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society (BPAS), a long-standing Member of the Climate Psychology Alliance, and she chairs the International Psychoanalytical Association's Committee on Climate Change. She was formerly an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychoanalytic Studies at University College London, and a member of teaching staff at the Tavistock Clinic. Body psychotherapy currently attracts more interest than ever before and is taking up an important role in the general psychotherapy field, bringing awareness of embodiment into what has been a verbally oriented profession. It is also developing a sophisticated approach which engages with recent advances in other fields including neuroscience, phenomenology, and cognitive studies, as well as the relational turn in psychotherapy. Body Psychotherapy for the 21st Century charts the history of this transformation and shows how four distinct versions of embodied practice have interacted to generate the current field. It makes the case for body psychotherapy not only within the therapeutic world, but in the social sphere, where bodily difference - of gender, ethnicity, age, sexuality - is one of the major markers of oppression.
